Spotify Joins The Lite App Bandwagon

Many online services are catering to users with less powerful devices with slimmed-down versions of their apps. Facebook’s Lite and Messenger Lite apps already have hundreds of millions of users across the globe. Uber launched a Lite app not too long ago and Instagram launched a Lite version just a few days back. Spotify is jumping on the bandwagon as well with its very own Lite app.

The Lite apps weigh much less than their full-fledged counterparts and consequently have fewer features which is especially true in Spotify’s case as many of the core features from the main app are missing in the Lite version.

Spotify Lite’s interface is similar to the main app but the similarities mostly end here. For starters, it doesn’t offer offline playback functionality while extreme quality playback and Spotify Connect are both missing. What’s odd is that the app doesn’t allow Premium subscribers to select the specific songs they want to listen to and it’s the same story in playlists as well.

Hopefully, Spotify Lite will be updated in the future with more features that make the app more useful for people who have actually been looking forward to the Lite version. Spotify Lite is now available for download from the Google Play Store.

$15 AT&T WatchTV Streaming Service Goes Live

AT&T recently announced a new standalone online TV streaming service called WatchTV. The service is cheaper than almost all of its competitors at just $15 per month and it’s certainly cheaper than AT&T’s existing DirecTV streaming service. WatchTV was previously available to AT&T subscribers on select plans but now it’s open for everyone.

AT&T’s $15 per month WatchTV standalone TV streaming service is now online for all users. Anybody who is looking for an alternative to a basic cable subscription package can now try out WatchTV.

The $15 per month subscription fee will give users access to channels like the Food Network, History, HGTV, BBC, Cartoon Network, Own, Tbs, A&E, AMC, and many others. The company has said that it will add more channels to the list down the line. Channels coming after launch include Comedy Central, Nicktoons, and others.

There is one caveat, though. WatchTV subscribers are limited to one stream which means that they can’t use their account to stream channels on multiple devices simultaneously.

All new subscribers will receive a one-week trial for free after which they will be charged $15 per month for WatchTV. Much like how it is with standalone streaming services, there are no long-term contracts and subscribers are free to cancel whenever they desire.

Google May Acquire Game Studios For Its Gaming Platform

It was reported earlier this year that Google is mulling a possible entry into the gaming space by launching its own game streaming service. The company is even believed to be working on hardware products that will help in achieving this objective. A new report claims that Google may be thinking about acquiring game development studios who will then create content for its platform.

Google’s game streaming project is reportedly codenamed “Yeti,” and Kotaku reports that it involves a streaming platform which will allow people to play games without having to download large files or required special consoles. Google could leverage its expertise in the cloud storage market to make this happen. One source described the idea as “playing The Witcher 3 within a tab on Google Chrome.”

There have also been whispers about YouTube being heavily integrated into the platform which would make sense. Many of the biggest gameplay streamers have chosen YouTube as their platform for choice and it’s also the first stop for those who want game reviews or walkthroughs.

“Imagine you’re playing a game and you run into a tricky boss or don’t know how to solve a puzzle. Instead of opening up your laptop or checking your phone for a guide, you could press a button to activate an overlay on your screen that cues up a YouTube walkthrough of the game you’re playing,” the report adds.

Google is said to have met with “several big video game development companies” at the Game Developers Conference in March and at the E3 2018 convention in June to find out if there’s interest in its streaming platform. The company is also said to be thinking about buying game development studios to have them create more content for its platform. Google has reportedly hired top game developers and marketers from EA, Sony, and other similar companies recently.
