Microsoft Edge Gets Visual Search On iOS Devices

Safari on iOS devices is a pretty decent native browser, but we imagine that there are some users who might prefer third-party options such as Google’s Chrome or Microsoft’s Edge due to their ability to sync with their desktop counterparts (assuming you’re using Windows). The good news for iOS users is that it looks like Microsoft is giving its Edge browser a bit of an upgrade.

This upgrade comes in the form if visual search which in a way works similar to Google Lens, where based on a photo that you’ve taken, it will then able to scour the web for similar-looking items which might come in handy if you’re trying to identify an object, or if you’re looking for something similar to buy.

Note that this is not the first time that Microsoft has mentioned visual search. The feature was launched earlier this month where it existed in beta form for iOS users. The rollout now suggests that the feature is good and ready for primetime. Visual search has also previously rolled out to the Android version of Edge, but now it looks like the iOS and Android versions of Edge are now on par.

The update should already be live so if you’ve yet to download Edge or update the app, head on over to the iOS App Store for the details.

OneDrive For Android Now Supports Fingerprint Locking

While most mobile devices these days come with fingerprint scanners to help protect the device from being accessed by unauthorized personnel, this does not mean that once unlocked, the contents of our phone should be easily accessed either. For example there might be instances where we lend our phones to someone, which doesn’t give them the right to snoop around.

This is why there are some apps, such as financial apps or note-taking apps that offer an additional layer of security to prevent prying eyes. For those who are using Microsoft’s OneDrive app on Android, you will be pleased to learn that Microsoft has recently issued an update for the app in which users can now attach their fingerprints to the app to lock it.

Prior to this OneDrive already offered users an additional layer of security via PIN code locking, but in case you are worried that your PIN can be guessed, then biometric security is probably the next best thing. This means that if anyone gains access to your phone, as long as they don’t have your fingerprint, they won’t be able to access the contents on OneDrive, assuming you’ve already set it up. The update should be live so head on over to the Google Play Store to get your hands on the latest version of the app.

Google Home Gets ‘Disable YouTube For Guests’ Feature

One of the features that comes with Google Home is the ability to recognize certain voices. This is done in order to prevent chaos. For example there are only certain commands that can be activated if the recognized voice is used, such as adding items to a grocery list. However there are also some commands that don’t require any voice recognition.

YouTube control is one of those commands, but not for long because according to a post on Reddit, Redditor Hey_Papito noticed what appeared to be a new option for Google Home in the Settings app. Redditor Jontu_Kontar later shared a screenshot in which it revealed that option to be “Disable YouTube for guests”.

While we can’t confirm exactly what it does, the description is pretty clear in which when enabled, this effectively disables guests from controlling various YouTube features via Google Home. This includes YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube TV. This means that if you don’t want your guests to mess around with YouTube (which could come in handy for store demos, for example), then this feature will allow users to do that.

Of course it will require that users set up Voice Match first to register recognized voices. That being said, the feature does not appear to be available to all users yet so it could be in testing, so don’t worry if you don’t see the option on your phone yet.

The hackers were able to do this by exploiting a vulnerability with the tablets. JPay … Continue reading

Shareholders Approve Of Disney & Fox’s Merger

For the past few months we have been hearing about Disney’s attempt to acquire Fox. At some point it looked like the deal could have fallen apart as Comcast threw in a bid of their own, which Disney later countered. Turns out that the new figure offered by Disney was good enough because shareholders of both Disney and Fox have since approved the merger.

Of course this is just one of the hurdles that both companies need to overcome before the deal can be finalized. The deal is also said to have been approved by the US Department of Justice with some caveats, namely how Disney would need to divest itself of Fox’s regional sports networks.

The deal would also still need to be approved by the FCC before it can be finalized, so they aren’t completely out of the woods yet. Comcast has also recently officially withdrawn its bid where they also congratulated Disney on the upcoming merger. Exactly when it will all be finalized remains to be seen, but safe to say that there are huge implications that will be a result of this merger.

According to Rupert Murdoch, executive chairman of Fox, “Combining the 21CF businesses with Disney and establishing new ‘Fox’ will unlock significant value for our shareholders. With [all of our executives and colleagues’] help, we expect the enlarged Disney and new ‘Fox’ companies will be pre-eminent in the entertainment and media industries.”

Idaho Inmates Hacked Prison Tablets & Stole $225,000

In a report from the Associated Press, it appears that 364 prison inmates from Idaho were recently caught in a scheme discovered earlier this month which involved hacking the prison tablets and stealing nearly a quarter of a million dollars by transferring various sums of money to their own accounts.

The tablets in question were JPay tablets which can be found in prisons across the country. They are used by prison inmates where they can use it for emails, music, and games. However it seems that according to Idaho Department of Correction spokesman Jeff Ray, the inmates were discovered to be “intentionally exploiting a vulnerability within JPay to improperly increase their JPay account balances”.

Some inmates credited their accounts with $1,000, while there was one inmate who was particularly daring and transferred $10,000 making it the largest amount credited. The total amount of money that was ultimately transferred was at $225,000. According to Ray, “This conduct was intentional, not accidental. It required a knowledge of the JPay system and multiple actions by every inmate who exploited the system’s vulnerability to improperly credit their account.”

JPay has since managed to recover $65,000 worth of credits and have suspended the ability of inmates to download music and games until they compensate the company for their losses. In the meantime those who were caught have been issued disciplinary offense reports which means that certain privileges could be lost, and some could even be reclassified to a higher security level.

Intel’s 10nm Cannon Lake Processors Will Be Ready By Late 2019

Apple recently announced their new 2018 MacBook Pros which we’re sure many were hoping to see incorporate the use of Intel’s new 10nm Cannon Lake processors. However for those who have been following the news, you might have heard how the processors were originally intended for a release in 2016.

However there were multiple delays which forced Apple to use Intel’s 14nm Coffee Lake processors instead. The good news is that if you think you can hold off on buying a new Mac computer until 2019 or 2020, you might then be able to benefit from the new Intel chips. This is according to a report from CNBC (via 9to5Mac) in which Intel’s interim CEO Bob Swan confirmed during the company’s earnings call that its 10nm chips will be ready by late 2019.

There are no specific dates mentioned but according to Swan, the new chips will be ready in time for the holiday season. Based on this there are some questions, namely whether or not this means that companies like Apple will be able to gain access to enough of these new chipsets for their 2019 Mac refresh, or if the refresh will only be able to take place in 2020.

There are some obvious benefits to the 10nm chips, such as supporting up to 32GB of LPDDR3 RAM. Apple managed to work around this limitation by using DDR4 which is more power-hungry, but offset this by offering a slightly larger battery. That being said for the non-power user, the differences might be negligible but given how much you would be paying, it is understandable that customers would want to future-proof their purchases as much as possible.

Lyft considers “zen mode” option that gives riders a talk-free trip

Ridesharing company Lyft has considered adding a new “zen mode” ride option that lets the driver know not to speak to the rider, according to a new report. Chatty drivers aren’t unusual when it comes to taxi rides, but many riders prefer to skip the small talk entirely, instead focusing on work or having a moment to relax. A “zen … Continue reading
