HAL 9000 is the original suspicious digital assistant. Before we invite Alexa, Google, and Siri into our lives to surveil our every action there was 2001: Space Odyssey’s HAL, an AI so murderous it’s a wonder anyone saw its actions and thought, “you know, not all of this is bad.” But despite the fact that HAL gave us…
The Perfect Nerf Knock-Offs
Posted in: Today's ChiliNerf ranks up there with Lego, Hot Wheels, and Barbie, as one of the most recognizable brands in the toy industry, but can you have just as much fun pinging your co-worker with foam ammo fired from one of its competitor’s products? I went hands on with two Nerf alternatives: the Adventure Force Commandfire and…

Though Dual SIM phones have yet to really take off here in the US, they’re pretty popular in other regions of the world. This is especially true in places like Europe and Asia, where people are more likely to visit other countries frequently. A lot of manufacturers offer dual SIM variants of their flagship phones in some regions, but one … Continue reading
The Huawei Mate 20 phone leaked today looks a lot like what we’d expected of the next Galaxy. Samsung’s Galaxy S10 has a lot expected of it – what with a bigger display-area-ratio and new technology and such. But what’s this? Huawei, you rascal, bringing a phone that’s all that and a bag of chips, well before the Galaxy S10 … Continue reading
Samsung launched its AR Emoji feature with the Galaxy S9 earlier this year. It brought a couple of Disney characters at launch and Samsung has continued to add more characters from the Disney universe to the feature. Samsung today announced that a new set of popular Disney characters is now available as AR Emojis on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+.
The Disney characters that are already available for AR Emoji include Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, Goofy, and the Incredibles’ family. Galaxy S9 users will now be able to transform themselves into characters from Disney’s popular Frozen movie.
The AR Emoji feature allows users to transform themselves into augmented reality avatars of their fan-favorite characters. The feature also lets users create their custom avatars that track their facial movements.
The avatars of Anna, Else, Olaf, and Kristoff are now available in the AR Emoji feature on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. The avatars can be accessed by tapping on the plus icon in the AR Emoji mode of the Galaxy S9’s camera app. The Disney Frozen pack has to be first downloaded from within the app before the avatars can be used.
Samsung promises that it will add more AR Emoji avatars from its collaboration with Disney in the future.

Samsung is expected to enter the smart speaker race as well with its very own product which will be powered by Bixby, its virtual assistant. A new report out of China claims that Samsung’s smart speaker will ship with Bixby 2.0. The next iteration of its assistant is said to feature significant improvements that address many of the pain points that Bixby users have had since its launch last year.
Samsung’s Bixby assistant was launched with the Galaxy S8 last year. It has developed a bit of a bad reputation for itself even though it offers deep integration with many features of the compatible devices.
Bixby 2.0 was announced at the Samsung Developer Conference late last year. The company has focused on transforming it into an intelligence tool which will be able to accomplish more complex tasks. The speaker won’t be the first device with Bixby 2.0, though. Samsung has previously confirmed that the Galaxy Note 9 will be the first to ship with the next iteration of Bixby.
We’ll get a better idea of what it’s capable of once the Galaxy Note 9 is in our hands. Samsung is expected to release its new smartphone on August 24th. It’s unclear as yet when the company is planning to release its smart speaker, some are still holding out on hope that the company will do that before the end of this year.

Facebook Confirms New Campaign Is Trying To Influence U.S. Midterm Elections

Facebook has understandably been more vigilant about political social media campaigns being run on its platform ahead of the U.S. midterm elections after what happened during the last presidential elections. The social network today revealed that it has identified and banned suspicious accounts that were taking part in “coordinated inauthentic behavior” in what appears to be an attempt to influence the U.S. midterm elections.
The social media campaign that it has identified and effectively banned may have been designed to influence the upcoming midterm elections in the United States which will take place this November. Facebook hasn’t confirmed as yet what particular organization or country was behind this campaign.
The New York Times reports that Facebook officials have briefed lawmakers about this and have pointed out that Russia might be involved in the campaign. All fingers were pointed at Russia for the social media campaign during the presidential elections as well.
The activity that Facebook discovered was designed to ignite tensions around controversial issues in the United States such as the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency and white supremacy. The suspicious accounts were found to be performing coordinated activity around the #AbolishICE trend and a second “Unite the Right” gathering of white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The company had identified eight Pages, 17 profiles, and seven Instagram accounts that were performing this activity. At least one of the pages was followed by over 290,000 people. A total of $11,000 was spent to run 150 ads between April 2017 and June 2018 by these accounts collectively.
Facebook will reportedly discuss its findings with members of the press in a briefing later today.
