Security Flaw Discovered In Fortnite’s Android Installer

Epic’s decision to launch Fortnite for Android outside of Google Play was an interesting one. It was obvious that the company was trying to avoid paying Google a cut of in-app purchases that were made within the game, but this raised some eyebrows as there were some who questioned the decision, namely due to security reasons.

It looks like the naysayers might have been proven right because it appears that the game’s Android installer was shipped with a security flaw, and ironically enough it was Google who discovered it (via TechCrunch), in which this issue could have been detected or avoided had it been released via the Play Store.

That being said, to Epic’s credit its developers were quick to fix the flaw and had it completed in less than a day, meaning that there was little chance that the flaw could have been discovered by hackers and exploited in that short window of time. Epic had previously requested Google to wait 90 days before disclosing the bug as they are wont to do, but it seems that Google decided to go ahead and publish it early regardless.

Epic’s CEO Tim Sweeney clearly wasn’t too thrilled by this development and has since issued a statement to Android Central where he called Google “irresponsible” to disclose the technicalities of the flaw this soon.

Epic genuinely appreciated Google’s effort to perform an in-depth security audit of Fortnite immediately following our release on Android, and share the results with Epic so we could speedily issue an update to fix the flaw they discovered.

However, it was irresponsible of Google to publicly disclose the technical details of the flaw so quickly, while many installations had not yet been updated and were still vulnerable.

An Epic security engineer, at my urging, requested Google delay public disclosure for the typical 90 days to allow time for the update to be more widely installed. Google refused. You can read it all at https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/112630336

Google’s security analysis efforts are appreciated and benefit the Android platform, however a company as powerful as Google should practice more responsible disclosure timing than this, and not endanger users in the course of its counter-PR efforts against Epic’s distribution of Fortnite outside of Google Play.

Melting Siberian permafrost reveals perfectly preserved ancient baby horse

Researchers have revealed the discovery of a perfectly preserved baby horse dated between 30,000 and 40,000-years-old. The ancient foal was found in melting Siberian permafrost; researchers estimate it was only around two-months-old at the time of its death, the cause of which is unclear. This is the youngest prehistoric horse ever discovered. The remains were found in Siberia’s Batagaika crater, … Continue reading

TCL Posts Teaser For BlackBerry KEY2 LE’s Unveiling At IFA 2018

With the various leaks and rumors, it has been all but confirmed that a BlackBerry KEY2 LE smartphone is in the works. In fact TCL seemed to have confirmed as much with a save the date invitation that they shared with the media with an announcement scheduled for the 30th of August.

Now in a post on the official BlackBerry Mobile Twitter page, it appears that the handset is being teased in which the back portion of the phone is shown off. The teaser doesn’t really tell us much but it does corroborate an earlier leak which showed off the pattern of the phone’s back, although exactly what kind of material we might be looking at is unclear.

In terms of specs, there hasn’t been much said yet officially, but the rumors are claiming a 4.5-inch 1080×1620 display with a 3,500mAh battery, and a 13MP + 5MP dual camera setup on the back. The handset is said to be based on the BlackBerry KEY2, although given its somewhat pared down specs, it has been speculated that this could be the “lite” model.

Either way take it with a grain of salt for now, but do check back with us during IFA 2018 next week where all the official details will be revealed.

Android 9.0 Pie Will Fully Support The Xbox One S Controller

Aesthetically speaking, the Xbox One and Xbox One S controllers look more or less identical and you might be hard pressed to tell them apart. However one of the key differences between both controllers is how the Xbox One S version comes with Bluetooth, meaning that you don’t need to deal with adapters/dongles.

It also meant it could in theory connect to Bluetooth devices, like Android phones and tablets, but unfortunately it did not work out that way as buttons were assigned wrongly. The good news is that according to the folks at XDA, it appears that after a good two years, Google has finally addressed the issue in the Android 9.0 Pie update.

This was discovered in an issue tracker launched two years ago in which a Google engineer had finally marked it as “fixed”. This means that if you have an Android Pie handset or tablet and an Xbox One S controller, you can try taking it for a spin to see if it works the way it should. That being said, Android Pie has yet to be released for many Android phones.

To date the Pixel handsets have received their update along with the Essential Phone, but other manufacturers have yet to release it, so it could be a while before you can use your Xbox One S controller with your phone.
