Posted in: Today's ChiliOne of the stranger movies that I have seen in recent memory is the flick called “Gamer” where a gamer is able to take over the body of a human prison inmate and use them to play a real-life video game where a loss means the prisoner dies. Researchers have developed a new system that is as close as we … Continue reading

Huawei AI Cube
Posted in: Today's Chili#IFA18 – Yesterday Netgear announced a rather interesting product with the Orbi Voice. What made this interesting was the fact that this was not only a mesh router system, but it also combined a speaker from Harman Kardon that also supported Amazon’s Alexa digital assistant platform, making it an all-in-one device.
Turns out that this idea is catching on very quickly because at IFA 2018, Huawei has also announced a similar product in the form of the Huawei AI Cube.
This is a smart speaker that also features support for Alexa, and also has the ability to act as a router with support for 2.4GHz and 5GHz channels, as well as 4G LTE. All it needs to support the latter is for users to purchase a data plan from their carrier, plug in the SIM Card, and they’ll be good to go.
Huawei has also touted the speaker’s capabilities where it features a 400ml sound cavity and an aluminum diaphragm that is supposed to produce “crystal clear” midrange and highs, along with a rounded bass. It also uses Huawei’s own audio technology, Huawei Histen which introduces virtual bass, linear phase equalizer, adaptive gain control, far-field voice recognition, and more.
Huawei has yet to set a price for the AI Cube or when it is expected to be available.

Huawei Locator with the white Huawei P20 Pro (new color)
#IFA18 – We’ve all been guilty of misplacing our bags, wallets, keys, and more. However thanks to technology these days, we are able to better keep track of them. Huawei has also announced the launch of the Huawei Locator, which is a device that can help with that. It is a location beacon device that will support a bunch of global navigation system standards, such as GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and Beidou.
It will work with nano SIM or eSIMs with support for global roaming. There are also features such as near-real-time location reporting, geofencing, and BLE Found that can help trigger an alarm on the device when it is paired with a smartphone. In concept it works similar to tracking devices like Tile, except with much more advanced features like GPS, although it is bulkier so it won’t exactly slip into your wallet.
However if you’re looking to keep track of things like your kids or a luggage, then slipping in the Huawei Locator should be able to get the job done. It also has an IP68 rating which means that using it for outdoor activities where it might get wet should not impede its functionality, but you probably won’t want to go deep sea diving with it. Unfortunately there is no word on pricing or availability yet.
