TSMC Could Remain Apple’s Exclusive Supplier For 2019’s A13 Chips

For the past few iPhone generations, TSMC has reportedly been the exclusive supplier to Apple for their A-series chipsets. Prior to that, both Samsung and TSMC were producing the chipsets for Apple. Now it looks like TSMC’s exclusive deal with Apple could continue into 2019, according to a report from EE Times.

This means that TSMC’s exclusivity with Apple would run for four generations of iOS devices, where the company’s exclusive deal kicked off in 2016 with the A10 used in the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, followed by the A11 in last year’s iPhones, and the A12 in this year’s iPhones, and now presumably the A13 in 2019’s iPhones.

Speaking to EE Times in an interview, Arete Research analyst Brett Simpson said, “As long as TSMC continues to offer something new at leading-edge every year and continues to execute well on yield, I could see Apple remaining sole source on foundry at TSMC for years to come.”  We have previously heard that Samsung was trying to win some orders for 2019’s A13 chipset, but this report seems to cast some doubt on whether or not that will happen.

Credit Suisse analyst Randy Abrams adds, “Apple and TSMC have mutually benefited to date from the relationship; Apple has been able to have annual upgrades to its processors, and TSMC has a very large anchor customer to bring it up to scale on its new nodes.”

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto Wants Developers To Shun The Free-To-Play Model

The free-to-play model is an extremely popular way of how developers and publishers can get gamers hooked onto a game, and continuously make money from them via in-app purchases for cosmetics, boosts, and so on. Naturally there are some who feel that this is not right, and one of the model’s opponents is none other than Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto.

Speaking at the Computer Entertainment Developers Conference in Yokohama, Japan, Miyamoto criticized the model and called upon fellow developers to start delivering more games at fixed prices and to not overcharge players, which he believes will create a more sustainable business in the long run.

That being said, Miyamoto, the game designer who created Super Mario and Donkey Kong, admitted that Nintendo’s attempts at the fixed cost model wasn’t a complete success. “I can’t say that our fixed-cost model has really been a success. But we’re going to continue pushing it forward until it becomes entrenched. That way everyone can develop games in a comfortable environment. By focusing on bringing games to the widest range of people possible, we can continue boosting our mobile game business.”

He also notes that subscription-style services could also be another sustainable model, where he feels that customers will be happy to pay a subscription to games that they feel are of good quality. In fact there are some companies who are sort of adopting that route. For example Blizzard’s World of Warcraft MMORPG has now made past expansions all free to play (the latest expansion still needs to be bought), and only requires that players be subscribed to it, thus reducing the barrier to entry.

Of course given how lucrative it is when it comes to earning money purely from in-app purchases, it’s hard to imagine that companies will be giving up the free-to-play model anytime soon, at least not as long as there are players who are willing to pay.

Apple Patents Non-Invasive Glucose Monitoring Tech

Our smartwatches and fitness trackers have revealed certain data about ourselves that we might not have previously known, thanks to its built-in sensors like the heart rate monitor. Naturally the functionality of such devices is expected to expand in the future, and last we heard, Apple had plans to introduce non-invasive glucose monitoring to the Apple Watch.

While the monitor in question is said to be years away from being made a reality, there is evidence to suggest that Apple is interested in the idea at the very least. This is according to a recently discovered patent (via AppleInsider) in which it shows Apple exploring the idea for a non-invasive method of monitoring the user’s glucose levels.

Based on the patent, it describes an optical system that uses absorption spectroscopy that can determine the concentration (such as glucose) of a substance by applying light to a sample. As light passes through the substance, the substance will absorb energy based on the wavelengths emitted, which in turn changes the light’s properties upon exit, which ultimately will be able to tell how concentrated a substance is.

While it sounds interesting and promising, as AppleInsider notes, existing scientific methods of identifying the makeup of a sample using short-wavelength infrared mid-wavelength infrared have not been successfully applied to glucose monitoring. That being said, there is no guarantee that this method will be used in Apple’s rumored glucose monitor, but at the very least it shows that Apple is interested and is actively exploring the idea.
