Google’s Titan Security Key Is Now Available For Purchase

These days when you consider the sophistication behind hacks and scam emails designed to trick you into giving away your login credentials, it is obvious that just a username and password is no longer enough to keep accounts safe. That is where two-factor authentications come into play, or in Google’s case, physical security keys.

Last month Google announced that they would soon start to sell their Titan security keys, and for those who are interested, you’ll be pleased to learn that the keys are now available for purchase via the Google Store (via The Verge) where the entire kit will cost $50. The Titan key was initially launched for Google Cloud customers last month, but now it looks like it will be available to all users who want that extra layer of protection.

Essentially the key is a form of two-factor authentication, where as long as it remains plugged into your computer, it will verify who you say you are when you log into various online services. The added advantage is that they are more resistant and less susceptible to phishing attacks. In fact Google had touted that the mandated use of the key at its headquarters have resulted in zero successful phishing attacks on their employees which is a rather bold claim to make.

Of course the downside is that you need to remember to bring the key with you everywhere you go if you want to remain protected. There is also the risk that you could lose it, but if you think that the added security is worth remembering to bring around an extra device, then head on over to the Google Store to get your hands on it.

Eve Launches A Trio Of HomeKit Compatible Devices

Eve (formerly known as Elgato) has recently announced a trio of new HomeKit compatible devices. This comes in the form of a light switch, a light strip, and also a new power switch. The HomeKit compatibility means that users will be able to control them via the Home app, or through Siri on the iPhone, Mac computer, or the HomePod.

Starting with the Eve Light Switch (pictured above), on the surface this looks like your typical light switch and is meant to replace your  existing one. It will even work like a regular light switch, although its HomeKit compatibility does make it “smarter”. The Light Strip is also pretty much as its name implies, where each strip will come in 2m lengths and users can chain them together for up to 10m in total.

Its functionality is pretty straightforward and for those with any experience in smart LED light strips such as those by Philips under its Hue branding probably know what to expect. Last but not least will be Eve’s power strip. This power strip will support up to three plugs at once, and because it offers connectivity, users will be able to track things via the app such as consumption, create schedules, and more.

Users will also be able to control the individual plugs which means that users will have more flexibility in what they want to do with it. There is no word on when Eve plans on releasing these new devices, so we’ll just have to keep an eye out for it.

Xiaomi’s Upcoming Mi Mix 3 Smartphone Will Feature A Popup Camera

The problem with phones sporting edge-to-edge displays is where would you house some of the components needed for the front part of the phone? This has resulted in the notch design which some seem to be okay with, while others have lambasted the companies that have adopted and perpetuated it.

However it seems that companies such as Vivo and Oppo have come up with a novel solution: hide the front-facing camera and pop it out only when necessary. This is an interesting solution in which Xiaomi seems to have decided that it is good enough to follow as well. In a post on Weibo (via TNW), the company’s president Lin Bin shared an image of the upcoming Mi Mix 3 that also packs its own popup camera.

Not much is known about the Mi Mix 3 for now, which is why it is interesting that Xiaomi is willing to reveal this much this early on. However judging by the photos, we can expect the same edge-to-edge display design as we have come to expect from previous releases, and also a popup camera which appears to have dual lenses.

There are some who have pointed out that while popup cameras do solve the problem of the notch, it creates another problem where what if the popup mechanism stops working one day? Or what if it gets damaged when it is open and won’t close? We suppose that’s the risk one has to take if you really hate the notched design.
