LG Android updates are rolling out – but not the Pie you’re waiting for

LG has begun rolling out Android updates to some of its more recent flagship phones, but don’t expect a taste of Android 9 Pie to come of it. Windows 10 Universal File Explorer update hints at interesting future

When Microsoft launched its touch-centric Windows 8 for the desktop, it was met with a great deal of resistance to the radically different way of interacting with desktops. Microsoft has since then stepped back a bit and offered the familiar traditional Windows desktop again. It has, however, flip-flopped between touch-based and non-touch UIs. Case in point is the telling lack … Continue reading

Facebook Speech Recognition Feature ‘Aloha’ Discovered

Companies such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung, and Amazon all seem to have their own digital assistants. This essentially leaves Facebook as being one of the major tech companies who does not. The company has dabbled in digital assistants in the past with “M”, although earlier this year it was announced that it had been shut down.

However it looks like Facebook could be testing another digital assistant, or at least is working on something similar. This is according to a discovery by research Jane Manchun Wong (via TechCrunch) who has in the past uncovered various upcoming features for Facebook and Instagram.

Dubbed “Aloha”, it appears that this is a speech recognition feature that Facebook is working on. It is unclear as to what the purpose of this feature is, but as TechCrunch notes, a few years ago they were told by sources that Facebook was looking to develop its own speech recognition software to transcribe casual conversations between friends, which tend to feature slang and colloquial terms.

In turn this could allow for more “natural” language processing, versus the formal way we tend to speak to digital assistants like Alexa or Google Assistant. It is unclear if Aloha has anything to do with the company’s plans for a smart speaker, a device which Facebook had delayed following its Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal from earlier this year. Either way we’ll just have to wait and see if more details about Aloha will eventually be shared.

macOS Mojave Will Drop Support For ‘Back To My Mac’ Feature

Back in 2007 with the launch of Mac OS X Leopard, Apple introduced a “Back to My Mac” feature which basically allowed users to access files stored on one computer from another, which in a way acted like a roundabout way of cloud storage. Given how dated the feature is, unsurprisingly Apple has decided to retire the feature in macOS Mojave.

In a support document on Apple’s website (via Cult of Mac), Apple has started to inform users that the feature will no longer be supported in the next update to macOS, or rather the feature will not be there at all which means that for those who are still using it, it’s time to start looking at alternatives. Apple has since recommended users some alternative services, such as iCloud Drive that more or less does the same thing, as long the files are stored on iCloud.

However for those who want to do more than just access files, Apple is also recommending features like screen sharing (check out Apple’s guide on how to set it up), or maybe even Apple Remote Desktop which will cost customers $80 to purchase the app. The latter option will be for more those who want more complete access to other Mac computers, like accessing a work computer from home, and vice versa.

However if you’re just looking for simple file access, iCloud Drive is an option. Google Drive (or Google One) is also an alternative, or Dropbox, all of which feature the ability integrate into macOS for quick and easy access.

Logitech G PRO Wireless Gaming Mouse Announced

There are many gaming mice in the market today, so if you’re looking for a bit more variety, Logitech is more than happy to oblige as the company has recently announced its latest gaming mouse in the form of the Logitech G PRO wireless gaming mouse. As the name suggests, this will be a wireless gaming mouse with a rather simplistic design.

One of the problems with gaming mice design is that many of them tend to be garish in terms of design with too many lights and buttons. However the G PRO seems to be simplifying that with a simple-looking design, where on the surface save for the “G” logo, you might not think that this is a gaming mouse.

However don’t let appearances fool you because under the hood, the G PRO appears to be quite a beast in terms of specs. We’re looking at the use of the HERO 16K sensor and the use of Logitech’s G LIGHTSPEED wireless technology with a response time of 1ms. It also weighs in at 80g making it one of the lighter gaming mice around, and the fact that it is wireless means that taking it with you on the go should not be an issue.

The mouse will also feature multiple buttons that users can assign to different functions in the game. Unfortunately in terms of pricing, the G PRO wireless is one of the more expensive options we’ve seen to date where it is priced at $150, but if you think you can justify paying for it then head on over to Logitech’s website for the details.

Google Fit Gets A Brand New Design And Revamp

Just like Apple, Google has their own fitness/health app called Google Fit. It was launched in 2014 and now fast forward about 4 years later, it seems that Google has decided to give the app a brand new design along with a revamp of some of its functions and features, which according to Google was developed alongside the American Heart Association (AHA) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

There will be two activity rings in the new Google Fit app which will be focused on Move Minutes and Heart Points. The former will focus on how often you move throughout the day, which we all know helps in terms of keeping yourself fit as sitting around all day has been shown to be bad for health. The idea is that hopefully this will motivate people to try and close that particular activity ring by taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking to dinner instead of driving, and so on.

As for Heart Points, this is where the app will give users credit for activities that they’ve done that involves moderate to intense activity, such as running, brisk walking, kickboxing, and so on. According to Google, the data shown in the Fit app can also be pulled from other fitness apps such as Strava, Runkeeper, Endomondo, and MyFitnessPal, so if you use those apps to track your activity, not to worry as that data can be shared with the Fit app as well.

The changes to the Fit app will be available across multiple platforms, including iOS, Android, and Wear OS.
