Apple could release an updated MacBook Air

According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple has been working on multiple new Macs. In particular, Apple could be planning to release a new entry-level laptop to replace the aging MacBook Air.

This isn’t the first rumor about a MacBook Air refresh. While Apple has released a 12-inch retina MacBook, it’s not nearly as cheap as the MacBook Air. It’s also not as versatile as it only has a single USB Type-C port.

And yet, the MacBook Air is arguably Apple’s most popular laptop design in recent years. Many MacBook Air users are still using their trusty device as there isn’t a clear replacement in the lineup right now. According to Bloomberg, the updated MacBook Air could get a retina display. Other details are still unclear.

After Apple updated the MacBook Air in March 2015, the company neglected the laptop for a while. It received an update in June 2017, but it was such a minor update that it looked like the MacBook Air was on life support.

It sounds like neither the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro (the one without a Touch Bar) nor the 12-inch MacBook have fostered as much customer interest as the MacBook Air.

Bloomberg also says that the Mac Mini is going to receive an update. The story of the Mac Mini is quite similar as the product has been neglected for years. Apple last updated the Mac Mini in October 2014 — it’s been nearly four years.

And the fact that Apple still sells the Mac Mini from 2014 is embarrassing. You can find tiny desktop PCs that are cheaper, smaller and more powerful. They don’t run macOS, but that’s the only downside.

It’s clear that laptops have taken over the computer market. Desktop computers have become a niche market. That’s why the updated Mac Mini could focus on people looking for a home server and who don’t want to mess around with a Raspberry Pi.

Netflix Bypassing Apple’s 30 Percent iTunes Cut On Subscriptions

Netflix is one of the most popular apps on the App Store. The app itself is free but users are required to purchase a subscription if they want access to the streaming service’s library. Apple gets to pocket a 30 percent cut on the first year of a subscription. With Netflix being the most popular online video streaming service, you can imagine that this 30 percent can quickly run into millions of dollars. Netflix is now running a test to bypass iTunes billing in 33 markets.

Netflix subscribers in select markets across Latin America, Europe, and Asia will be unable to pay for their subscription using iTunes until September 30th. They will instead to redirected to the mobile web version of Netflix where they have to enter the payment details directly.

Netflix is running this test in 33 countries which will continue until September 30th. “During this time, customers in these countries may experience any of the following when launching the Netflix app on an iOS (mobile or tablet) device: 1. Ability to sign up in app with only iTunes Mode Of Payment. 2. Ability to log into Netflix but not sign up (sign up only via mobile browser),” said a Netflix customer support agent.

The countries where Netflix is conducting this test include Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Norway, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan and Thailand.

Redirecting subscribers to its website means that the payment doesn’t go through iTunes. This enables Netflix to avoid paying Apple a 30 percent cut. It remains to be seen, though, if the company will make this permanent going forward.

Shortwave Is An Experimental Podcast App Being Developed By Google

A team within Google has reportedly been developing a new app called Shortwave which will let users discover and play podcasts. A trademark filing has been discovered for the app which describes Shortwave’s core feature as allowing “users to search, access, and play digital audio files, and to share links to audio files.”

The trademark filing doesn’t specify which kind of audio will be accessed through the app but a representative for Google has told The Verge that Shortwave will be focused on spoken word content.

No further information about the app has been revealed at this point in time. The app’s features are unknown but Google has tried its hand with translation and smart captioning in previous podcast products.

There’s already a podcasts app for Android from Google that was launched in June. It offers deep integrated with Google Assistant and supports cross-device syncing. Shortwave is being developed in Google’s Area 120 incubator and it’s not related to any current Google products.

“One of the many projects that we’re working on within Area 120 is Shortwave, which helps users discover and consume spoken-word audio in new ways,” confirmed a spokesperson for the company, adding that “Like other projects within Area 120, it’s a very early experiment so there aren’t many details to share right now.”
