Qualcomm’s Next Flagship Processor Might Have A Dedicated NPU

Qualcomm’s flagship processors like the Snapdragon 845 are widely used by the industry for high-end devices. The company hasn’t bundled a dedicated neural processing unit or NPU with its chips so far. AI processing thus takes place on the main chip along with other tasks. That might change with the company’s flagship chip for next year which is expected to feature a dedicated NPU.

A dedicated neural processing unit will mean that the processing of AI tasks will take place on a separate portion of the chip. This separation of tasks not only improves performance but also allows for more advanced AI support.

Qualcomm’s next flagship processor – the Snapdragon 855 – is reportedly going to feature a dedicated NPU. It won’t be the first chip to have a dedicated NPU since Huawei has already done that with the Kirin 970 that it launched at IFA 2017.

Qualcomm is now expected to do the same for its chip next year. It will be the first chip from the company to feature a dedicated neural processing unit. The range of AI functions that this implementation will enable remains to be seen but on the face of it, it’s going to be better compared to the current implementation.

Bear in mind, though, that this is based on third-party reports. Qualcomm itself hasn’t confirmed any details about its next flagship processor.

Amazon Kindle Voyage Appears To Have Been Discontinued

Amazon originally released the Kindle Voyage back in 2014. The e-reader had some additional features compared to the Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite. It was also a bit more expensive but many Kindle fans went ahead and picked one up due to the additional features. It now appears that Amazon has discontinued the Kindle Voyage.

Amazon had reportedly removed the Kindle Voyage from its storefront at the end of July. That was perhaps the biggest indication that the company had decided to discontinue this product. Its premium status was taken over by the Kindle Oasis that was launched in 2016 for $250.

The Kindle Voyage was thinner and lighter than other Kindle devices when it was launched in 2014. It also had a glass screen and haptic buttons for page turning. At $200, it was a bit more expensive than the other Kindle options.

According to reports, the Kindle Voyage has also been removed from Amazon’s comparison table for Kindle e-readers. The table only has the basic Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, and the premium Kindle Oasis for comparison now.

While it may not be possible to purchase a new unit of the Kindle Voyage through Amazon anymore, refurbished versions of the e-reader are still available and can be purchased by anyone who wishes to get their hands on this product.

Huawei’s Android Pie-Based EMUI 9.0 Will Be Unveiled At IFA 2018

Huawei, one of the fastest growing Android smartphone manufacturers, has given some details about its roadmap for the Android Pie update. Google released the Android 9 Pie update a few weeks ago and it’s now up to OEMs to roll it out for their devices. Huawei will be unveiling its Android Pie-based EMUI 9.0 custom skin at IFA 2018.

The first step of Huawei’s Android Pie roadmap is to unveil the custom skin at IFA 2018. Once EMUI 9.0 is public at the upcoming convention, it will then start rolling out the update to compatible devices.

Huawei will obviously prioritize flagship devices which will receive this update first. The Huawei P20 series will be the first to receive EMUI 9.0 with all features of Android 9 Pie being part and parcel of the update. It’s unclear at this point in time if Huawei will release the update for the P20 series immediately after IFA 2018.

Once the P20 series gets the update, Huawei will then release it for the Mate series. It hasn’t said when that’s going to happen. The company hasn’t confirmed the roadmap for other devices even though it has plenty of smartphones that are fully compatible with Android 9 Pie. It will update users about the EMUI 9.0 release status for those devices in due course.
