Apple Reportedly Had To Redesign Its Entry-Level 13-inch MacBook

Apple’s MacBook lineup of computers are by no means affordable, with its cheapest model possibly being the MacBook Air. However there have been rumors that Apple could be planning the launch of a new entry-level 13-inch MacBook that could potentially replace the MacBook Air as an entry-level model.

The laptop has yet to be officially launched but according to DigiTimes, one of the possible reasons for its supposed “delay” was due to the fact that Apple was forced to redesign the laptop. The report claims that Apple had aimed for a Q4 2017 launch but due to Intel’s next-gen chipsets having been delayed, Apple had to turn to the use of the larger 14nm Kaby Lake processors.

As a result of having to use the larger chip, Apple had to redesign the internals of the laptop to get it to fit. If you’ve ever seen an Apple presentation or a teardown of any of its products, you know that Apple not only focuses a lot on the design of the outside of a product, but also how its internals are designed.

This allows Apple to make its products thinner and lighter while packing in more features than before, which means that even a slight increase in chip design would have a domino effect on the rest of the laptop’s internals. No word on when this laptop will be announced, but chances are it will be either next month alongside the new iPhones, or the month after.

Apple Reassures That No Personal Data Was Compromised During Hack

It was recently revealed that a while ago, Apple’s corporate network had been hacked by a teen based in Melbourne, Australia. The reports claim that the teen had managed to download almost 90GB worth of secure files and also access customer accounts, which we’re sure many are now worried about that information potentially being exposed.

However according to a statement Apple has since released to The Guardian (via MacRumors), the company is reassuring users that no personal data had been compromised during the hack. “At Apple, we vigilantly protect our networks and have dedicated teams of information security professionals that work to detect and respond to threats.”

“In this case, our teams discovered the unauthorized access, contained it, and reported the incident to law enforcement. We regard the data security of our users as one of our greatest responsibilities and want to assure our customers that at no point during this incident was their personal data compromised.”

In the original report, it seems that the teen had apparently “dream of” working for Apple. The hack also occurred over a year ago where Apple had sought out the help of the FBI when they noticed the unauthorized access. Details of the hack were not shared, but apparently the teen had a method of accessing the servers that “worked flawlessly”.

iPad Mini Might Not See A Refresh This Year

At one point in time a very popular tablet category was the “mini” category where manufacturers would churn out tablets with 7-inch or so displays, which were admittedly popularized by Apple’s iPad mini. The mini trend seems to have died out with Apple more or less being the only company still putting out such devices.

For those who love the iPad mini, there might be bad news because it seems that the iPad mini might not be refreshed this year. According to a report from DigiTimes, apparently Apple has no plans to refresh the iPad mini this year, which means that if you wanted a new model, you’d be out of luck. Instead you’d have to opt for the fourth generation iPad mini which was originally launched back in 2015.

This means that the tablet would be a tablet with three years old worth of hardware in it, and while we suppose it is still largely functional, we’re sure that there are some who would love to see it updated with more modern hardware. There have been rumors in the past that have suggested that Apple could be planning on phasing out the iPad mini.

Some of the appeals of the iPad mini is its smaller screen and lower price tag compared to the regular iPad, but earlier this year Apple did launch a more affordable 9.7-inch model, so if price is a bigger factor compared to portability, that could be worth checking out as an alternative.
