Fitbit’s upcoming Charge 3 to sport full touchscreen, per leak

This appears to be the Fitbit Charge 3 and, if it is, several big changes are in the works for Fitbit’s premier fitness tracker band.

The leak comes from Android Authority which points to the changes. First, the device has a full touchscreen rather than a clunky quasi-touchscreen like the Charge 2. From the touchscreen, users can navigate the device and even reply to notifications and messages. Second, the Charge 3 will be swim-proof to 50 meters. Finally, and this is a bad one, the Charge 3 will not have GPS built-in meaning users will have to bring a smartphone along for a run if they want GPS data.

Price and availability was not reveled but chances are the device will hit the stores in the coming weeks ahead of the holidays.

This is a big change for Fitbit. If the above leak is correct on all points, Fitbit is pushing the Charge 3 into smartwatch territory. The drop of GPS is regrettable but the company probably has data showing a minority of wearers use the feature. With a full touchscreen, and a notification reply function, the Charge 3 is gaining a lot of functionality for its size.

Android Pie makes call recording impossible without root

Google giveth and Google taketh away. New software versions are often expected to bring in new features and remove bugs but it isn’t unheard of for things to happen the other way around. There are some cases that features presumed to be there forever are suddenly yanked out without as much a warning. That definitely feels like the case with … Continue reading

It’s that time of year again. New Android version, new guessing and then waiting game for which phones will get the update and, just as importantly, when. Things have gotten better over the years, in no small part thanks to high-profile security scares and Apple gloating, but it’s far from being ideal. Ideally, that would be when lists like this … Continue reading

Verizon’s 5G Broadband Will Include YouTube TV, Apple TV 4K

5G is expected to be the next standard in mobile connectivity, and as expected it will be faster than what is offered in the market today. How much faster, you ask? According to a report from Variety, it seems that it will be fast enough to the point where Verizon is comfortable including YouTube TV and Apple TV 4K as part of its 5G broadband bundle.

According to Verizon’s new CEO Hans Vestberg, “We believe 5G will disrupt the entertainment industry further and are excited to provide our customers with the choice of the best network, the best content and the best partners.” Details of the deal are a bit scarce at this point in time, but it is expected to be revealed in full once the 5G residential broadband service goes on sale.

This is a huge coup for Apple to have the Apple TV bundled together with broadband service. Given what we’ve been hearing so far about Apple’s plans for their own streaming service, ensuring that the Apple TV gets into as many homes as possible will be a great way for the company to encourage customers to sign up for their services.

We have heard rumors that Apple could also be planning their own streaming bundle which could include access to TV shows, music, and news.

Apple Reportedly Developing Own Chips For Health Devices

Over the years we’ve seen how Apple has been creating separate processors for use in their devices. For example there is a separate processor designed to handle motion-based data, then there is also a chip that handles Bluetooth, then there is also a chip designed for security purposes, so to learn that Apple could be developing a new chip for health-based devices doesn’t come as a surprise.

This is according to a report from CNBC who claims that Apple has a team in place who are exploring the idea of creating a custom processor for health devices. The report is based on job listings from Apple’s Health Sensing hardware team, which according to the listing says, “We are looking for sensor ASIC architects to help develop ASICs for new sensors and sensing systems for future Apple products. We have openings for analog as well as digital ASIC architects.”

It is unclear as to what kind of information these chips would measure because as it stands, Apple’s chief health and fitness related device, the Apple Watch, comes with a bunch of sensors of its own already that does the job pretty well. It is possible that this could simply be Apple’s way of further customizing their products to their specifications, and relying less on outside help. Either way it might be too early too tell what’s going on, so take it with a grain of salt for now.
