Older Fire TV devices get improved protection against Android malware

It came to light earlier this year that a virus was attacking Fire TV devices because of an Android-based vulnerability relating to ADB (Android Debug Bridge) connections. But part of the newest software update, 5.2.6.6, should make things a lot more…

Researchers create super-insulating gel using beer waste

Researchers from Colorado University Boulder have created an insulating gel that could be used to coat the windows of habitats in space. With such a coating applied the humans inside the habitats could trap and store energy from the sun. The gel would trap heat much like a greenhouse stays warm in the winter. One key attribute of this new … Continue reading

Chromebooks dual-booting Windows 10 is a terrible idea

After years of being ignored, if not ridiculed, Chromebooks are slowly becoming more interesting and more appealing. Chrome OS, combined with Android and Linux, is transforming into a platform that can make both Microsoft and Apple worry. All of that, however, might be for naught. Because come October, Chromebooks might be declared dead or at least on their way to … Continue reading

Uber Uses AI To Determine If Your Trips Are Personal Or Business

People use Uber for work trips and personal trips, and sometimes in the heat of the moment, we might accidentally expense a work trip to our own personal account, and a personal trip to our work accounts. This means that it can get messy trying to sort out all the receipts and what not, but Uber is here to help.

Uber has announced that they will be taking advantage of AI to help users manage their trip profiles more accurately. According to Uber, “Using machine learning, Uber can predict which profile – and corresponding payment method – an employee should be using, and make the appropriate recommendation. By analyzing billions of Uber trips each year at an aggregate level, Uber can detect patterns and trends that predict the purpose of a trip.”

Uber also notes that based on their early estimates, it seems that these profile suggestions are effective at least 80% of the time. In addition to using AI, Uber has also announced that they will be adding features like trip reviewers and an in-app trip resolution feature that lets users review their trips and also resolve any issues that they might have.

We should point out that these features are for Uber for Business, so if your company uses and relies on Uber for transportation, these new features should come in handy.

‘Synthetic Click’ Attack Discovered For macOS High Sierra

When you click on a button, a link, or an item on your computer, chances are you are doing it with your mouse. However it seems that recently it was discovered that macOS High Sierra is vulnerable to a “synthetic click” attack which is essentially a software-based clicking of the interface, meaning that your computer registers clicks that you might not even have made.

This means that in theory, hackers could use it to dismiss security notifications, or it could be used to enable permissions to apps, and so on. This attack was discovered by DigitaSecurity’s Chief Research Officer Patrick Wardle and revealed during Defcon 2018. According to Wardle, it seems that he stumbled across this flaw by accident when he discovered that his code’s actions were working around the restrictions put into place.

He said, “Two lines of code completely break this security mechanism. It is truly mind-boggling that such a trivial attack is successful. I’m almost embarrassed to talk about the bug as it’s so simple – though I’m actually more embarrassed for Apple.” The good news is that this flaw only seems to affect one version of macOS, which is High Sierra.

Wardle also points out that this issue will be fixed with the Mojave update which will block all synthetic events completely, although hopefully Apple will issue a patch for this as we’re sure that not all macOS users can or want to upgrade to Mojave upon its release.

Google Assistant ‘Face Match’ Feature Spotted In APK Teardown

Ever since Apple introduced Face ID to the iPhone X last year, the rumors have been running rampant that Android OEMs are expected to follow suit. To date we have yet to see an OEM offer up a similar solution to what Apple has, but could Google be next? According to a recent APK teardown by XDA, there are signs to suggest that they could be.

Based on the APK teardown of Google Assistant, it has been discovered that a feature called “face match” is in the works. This is actually not the first time that this feature has been spotted as previously Android Police spotted a settings in Assistant that was codenamed “Avocado”. Details about the feature are scarce, but based on its name alone, it would seem that this could be some kind of facial recognition feature.

Google already has its “Trust Face” feature that has been hanging out for a while already, so there is a good chance that Face Match is a new feature that is meant to act as an upgrade or replacement of it. There have also been rumors that the Pixel 3 might be sporting upgraded dual front-facing cameras, and so Face Match could be a new feature that could be exclusive to the phone.

In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but hopefully Google will have more details to share when they officially announce their new Pixel phones in October.
