Smart speakers are great tools that allow users to control their smart homes using nothing but their voice. However for those who are more privacy-minded, smart speakers also represent an instance in which it could potentially be used as a tool to spy on you by malicious hackers. Unfortunately that’s what researchers discovered with Amazon’s Echo.
A team of researchers from China discovered a flaw within Amazon’s Echo that could have potentially allowed hackers to use it to eavesdrop on users. Thankfully this issue was complex enough where chances of you being hit by such an attack is very slim, but undoubtedly highlights some of the potential risks.
Basically this attack involved the hacker(s) taking out the flash memory chip from an Echo device, modify its firmware to root access, and placing it back on its circuit board. After which it involved taking advantage of Alexa’s web interface vulnerabilities, and the end result was a device that could spy on its users.
However like we said this attack is rather complex and would require the hacker to get their hands on your Echo device to begin with, but like we said it highlights some potential dangers, especially in setups like hotel rooms where anyone could easily gain access to an Echo device. The good news is that Amazon has since fixed the vulnerabilities on their end, so hopefully we won’t be hearing about this attack in the real world anytime soon.

It has been about two years since Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 7 which ended in disaster for the company, which for those unfamiliar was due to the fact that the Note 7 was shipped out with batteries that were prone to exploding due to certain factors. Samsung has since moved on and have successfully launched multiple flagships since.
However perhaps to remind users that its phones are safe, Samsung Electronics President Koh Dong-jin was reported to have told reporters that the batteries in the recently-launched Galaxy Note 9 are perfectly safe. He was quoted as saying, “The battery in the Galaxy Note 9 is safer than ever. Users do not have to worry about the batteries anymore.”
Koh also expressed his confidence in the Note 9, believing that the phone will sell better than its predecessor, the Galaxy Note 8 which was launched last year. He cites how the Note 9’s intelligent camera and improved stylus as being some of the reasons why he thinks the Note 9 will be able to outsell its predecessor.
Of course whether or not this will happen remains to be seen. Companies such as Apple and Samsung used to dominate the smartphone industry, and while they still command a sizeable market share, competitors such as Huawei have been gaining traction and who have recently dethroned Apple to become the world’s second largest smartphone seller.

Instagram displays ads in between the news feed and also in its Stories. It’s how the company makes its money. These ads are also targeted which means that these are ads that Instagram thinks you might like based on a number of factors. However recently it seems that quite a few are taking offense to Instagram’s ads for an app called Facetune.
For those unfamiliar, Facetune is an app that is designed to help people capture the “perfect” selfie. Like most photography apps, Facetune comes with filters and tools that help to remove skin imperfections. However it seems that the ad is targeting women under 25, and this is what some are finding offensive, possibly due to stereotypes or that it could encourage people to chase the “perfect” look.
A study conducted by the International Journal of Eating Disorders found correlation between teens who use social media to post manipulated photos of themselves, and having high scores when it comes to body-related and eating concerns. It was also recently suggested that due to apps that offer “beautifying” tools, there is an increase in younger people seeking out plastic surgery to make themselves look as good as their selfies.
According to AdNews, Instagram declined to comment on the report and the Facetune ads, claiming that they only approve of ads on its platform as long as it abides by their guidelines which was designed to protect its community.
