Facebook has joined the list of companies that have publicly pledged to power their entire global operations on 100 percent renewable energy. The company committed in a blog post today that it’s going to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 75 percent and power its global operations with 100 percent renewable energy by the end of 2020.
Facebook also pointed out that it’s on track to be one of the largest corporate purchasers of renewable energy. It made its first purchase of wind power back in 2013 and since signed contracts for more than 3 gigawatts of new solar and wind energy.
It further adds that all of these wind and solar projects are new and on the same grid as its data centers. This results in job creation from each of these projects in addition to environmental benefits.
It’s following up on the goal it set in 2015 to support 50 percent of its facilities with renewable energy by 2018. It ended up achieving this goal a year earlier as Facebook reached 51 percent clean and renewable energy use last year.
Facebook has already pledged its support for climate action by backing the Paris Agreement through the We Are Still In initiative. Its pledge to hit 100 percent renewable energy use is a part of that support.

Premium audio company Bose has announced the launch of a new product that will take on smart speakers from the likes of Sonos. The Bose Home Speaker 500 is a new premium audio product which comes with Alexa onboard so it will be able to do more than just play music. The company has said that this product will get support for other voice assistants in the future so you can probably expect Google Assistant to arrive in a few months.
Given that voice assistants will be present, there’s an eight-microphone array for far-field voice recognition. This is what will enable the product to pick up the user’s voice even if they’re across the room and there’s a lot of background noise. Bose will add AirPlay 2 support as well early next year.
The Bose Home Speaker 500 also happens to have a small display on the front where the album art of whatever’s currently playing will be displayed. It’s not a touchscreen display and won’t show any other content.
There are two custom drivers inside the speaker that are pointed in opposite directions so that the sound that reflects off the walls nearby. There are a few buttons at the top for controlling playback. The speaker costs $400 and will be available for purchase in October.

Some of you may have heard of people going on dates with people they meet online just to have a nice meal paid for by the other person and never call them back. At least they don’t run out of them and actually pretend to be interested until the date is over. That can’t be said for 45-year-old Paul Gonzales who over the past couple of years has developed a bit of a reputation as a dine-and-dasher, in that he scammed free meals out of women he met online.
LA County prosecutors said that Gonzales pleaded not guilty to 10 felony charges related to accusations that he took “financial advantage of women he met mostly through dating apps and websites.”
News of his exploits has been covered as far back as 2016 by local outlets in California. He ended up being called a dine-and-dash dater because he allegedly only went on internet dates to run out before the bill came.
On one such date he ordered more than $100 in food. The woman said that he ordered two entrees and excused it by saying that he was a bodybuilder. He later said that he was going to the bathroom and never came back, leaving her with quite a hefty bill.
In the ten cases that he has been charged in, the women had to pay the bill in eight cases, the restaurants picked up the tab in the remaining two. The total amount he is accused of defrauding dates out of is $950.
He has been charged with seven counts of extortion, two counts of attempted extortion, and one count of grand theft. He’s looking at a maximum sentence of 13 years if convicted.
