Facebook’s Video Chat Device Could Be Announced Next Week
Posted in: UncategorizedEarlier this year there were rumors that Facebook was planning on getting into smart speakers as well. Following the success of Amazon and Google, it’s not surprising that Facebook wants a slice of that pie. Now according to a report from Cheddar, Facebook is expected to announce the device next week.
Codenamed “Portal”, this is a device that is more similar to the Amazon Echo Show and Google’s Smart Display lineup, where it will focus on the fact that it has a display and will allow users to make video calls. Facebook had initially planned to launch the device earlier this year, but the company delayed their plans following the fallout from the Cambridge Analytica data scandal, in which it was naturally assumed that the last thing people needed at that time was a set of speakers that was always listening.
Details are scarce, but Cheddar’s report claims that the device will come with privacy features like a shutter that will cover the camera. There will also be the use of AI which will help to identify users in the frame, which can also be used to track them in the room so that users can move around while chatting and not worry about going out of frame.
Take it with a grain of salt for now and check back with us next week for the details. While it has been several months since the data scandal, one has to wonder if Portal will be successful. Facebook has attempted to launch hardware in the past but has not really seen much success, so it will be interesting to see if Portal will change that narrative.

Google’s AMP is slowly making its rounds on the web on mobile devices where users browsing Google Search can find articles that “instantly” load. However for the most part it does require users to use Google Search in order to take advantage of it, but now according to Microsoft, they have announced that Bing will also support it.
Take note that Microsoft had previously implemented AMP into some of its apps, including the Bing app. However in this particular instance, what Microsoft has done is added AMP support to Bing on the web, meaning that if you are using Bing in your mobile browser, you should still be able to access websites that use Google’s AMP feature.
According to Microsoft’s announcement on the Bing blog, “Today, we are pleased to announce the release of Bing AMP viewer and Bing AMP Cache enabling AMP-enabled web pages to work directly from Bing’s mobile search results allowing Bing to provide faster mobile experiences to Bing users.”
“On Monday, the 17th we started the first phase of the global roll out of this AMP viewer and AMP carrousel in the United States for the news carrousel. We will continue the phased roll out to more web sites, more countries and regions and other links in the search results pages.” So if you are more of a Bing user, these are the changes and improvements that you can look forward to.

Walmart started out as your traditional retailer, relying on its brick and mortar stores to sell its goods to customers. However over the years as technology started to afford shoppers different ways of shopping, we’ve seen Walmart start to adapt its operations accordingly, whether it be turning to companies like Uber and Lyft for deliveries, or adopting the use of machines in place of cashiers.
Now other areas we’ve seen Walmart interested in is virtual reality (VR), where previously the company had started to use VR to train some of its staff at the company’s training centers. Now it looks like Walmart is expanding on that program by distributing the Oculus Go VR headsets to its stores across the US to help train more of its staff.
According to Andy Trainor, Walmart’s senior director of Walmart U.S. Academies, “The great thing about VR is its ability to make learning experientia. When you watch a module through the headset, your brain feels like you actually experienced a situation. We’ve also seen that VR training boosts confidence and retention while improving test scores 10 to 15 percent – even those associates who simply watched others experience the training saw the same retention boosts.”
Walmart won’t be the first to use VR to train its staff. Last year Google experimented with the idea of using VR as a training tool, where they found that using VR was more effective compared to just watching videos.
