Andy Rubin’s Essential dared to be ambitious. It may not have been a runaway success, but the Essential PH-1 has definitely left a memorable mark in the Android market. While it may never have a successor, the good news is that the startup is still very much committed to supporting the device all the way to 2020. That’s the hope … Continue reading
While the iPhone Xs and Xs Max continue to employ the use of the dual camera setup, the cheaper iPhone XR will be using a single camera. We’re sure many are wondering if the single camera will be capable of capturing the same bokeh-like effects compared to dual camera handsets.
It turns out that it will, and it seems that to achieve that, Apple will be relying almost entirely on an algorithm to do so. In a post on Medium by journalist Lance Ulanoff, he spoke to several Apple execs about the cameras on the new iPhones where Graham Townsend, Apple’s Senior Director Camera Hardware confirmed that the iPhone XR will use algorithm to achieve the bokeh-like effects that the iPhone Xs and Xs Max achieve with its dual camera setup.
Sebastien Marineau-Mes, Apple’s VP Software Camera, Photos & Security also added, “We turned the model of a lens into math and apply it to that image. No one else is doing what this does. Others just do ‘blur background.’” Note that Apple isn’t the first to use software to try and accomplish bokeh effects.
Some might recall how the Pixel smartphones were launched with single cameras, but yet still managed to pull off very impressive boeh using nothing but software. It remains to be seen how well the iPhone XR’s camera handles in real life as the phone is only scheduled to be released in October.

Whenever you come across an Instagram post, sometimes it can look messy as it has been peppered with a ton of hashtags in a bid to try and get the post to reach as wide an audience as possible. Perhaps in a bid to clean things up, it has been discovered by app researcher Jane Manchun Wong that Instagram is testing a way to hide hashtags in captions.
Basically right now when users add hashtags, they will have to type it in manually. However according to her findings, it seems that Instagram is testing allowing users to select hashtags from a list which at the same time also seems to hide them and prevent them from showing up in captions in your posts.

Presumably these hidden hashtags will continue to function as per usual to help users discover posts, but also help to clean up captions by not having them filled with hashtags. Speaking of reach, Instagram is also testing out something that could limit the reach of posts. Wong also discovered that Instagram is testing geofencing for posts and stories.

Similar to how Facebook posts can be targeted by language or region, this is a feature that Instagram appears to be testing as well, where it will limit posts to certain regions which could be useful for brands who might want to launch marketing campaigns for different countries but not have them flood the feed of their followers. These are currently in testing and there’s no word on when they might be made available, if at all.

Not all displays were created the same. Given that people have different needs from their displays, this has resulted in companies creating displays for different purposes, such as gaming where the emphasis could be on faster refresh rates and also syncing with the GPU to prevent screen tearing and ghosting.
For creative professionals who might have a need for a display for photo or video editing or graphic design, then perhaps you might be interested to learn that Philips has recently taken the wraps off a new 32-inch 4K display which is apparently aimed at creative professionals with features such as support for HDR, and also a mode that reduces blue light which is said to cause sleep problems.
Dubbed the Philips Brilliance monitor with the model number 328P6VUBREB, this monitor will feature a 4ms response time and a 60Hz refresh rate. It will also offer 600 nits of brightness, 3000:1 contrast ratio, and there will also be a USB-C port which will allow users to connect devices like the MacBook Pros to it.
For non-USB-C users, there will also be other display options such as DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.0 inputs. There are also four USB 3.0 ports, one of which will offer fast charging for mobile devices. The display was originally announced in the UK and is expected to be available in November for around $740. No word on US availability just yet.
