Another year, another batch of new iPhones. More than just the beginning of a new breed of iPhones, last year’s iPhone X is changing the narrative ever so slightly when it comes to upgrading to the latest and greatest. Yes, it’s an “S” generation, but, unlike before, the decision isn’t as clear-cut. But rather than directly answer the question of … Continue reading
We totally understand where companies are coming from these days, where through mobile wallets, companies such as Apple want users to be able to make payments, use loyalty cards, keep their student IDs, use for public transportation, and so on. However there is a problem and that is what if your iPhone is dead or charging? How would you access those features then?
As noted by AppleInsider, it seems that Apple might have a solution that is limited to its new iPhones – the iPhone Xs, Xs Max, and XR. This comes in the form of “Express Cards with power reserve”, in which it suggests that certain NFC transactions can still be used even if iOS isn’t running at the moment, like when the phone is charging.
According to Apple’s description of the feature, “If iOS isn’t running because iPhone needs to be charged, there may still be enough power in the battery to support Express Card transactions. Supported iPhone devices automatically support this feature with a transit card designated as the Express Transit card [and] student ID cards with Express Mode turned on.”
However like we said, this seems to be limited to those who are buying the new iPhones which suggests that there could be certain hardware barriers that prevents it from being used with older iPhones. This is no doubt a useful feature to have and we’re sure that there will be moments when some of you guys will be able to appreciate it.

Microsoft’s and Qualcomm’s campaign to get Windows 10 running on ARM-based Snapdragon chips has mostly fallen flat on its face. While the idea of power efficient, always on, and always connected PCs is undoubtedly tempting, the execution was sorely lacking, especially when it came to banking on last year’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. The new Snapdragon 850 aims to correct that, … Continue reading
When the new iPhones were announced, Apple touted a bunch of new features and improvements that they were making to the phones. However they did not cover everything since it would take too much time, and one of those improvements they did not cover was improvements to LTE speeds.
According to a recent LTE speed test, it was found that Apple’s iPhone Xs and Xs Max showed tremendous speed improvements over its predecessor, the iPhone X. While the iPhone X was no slouch, it was found that the newer iPhones have shown an average speed increase of over 200% in terms of downloads across all the major carriers in the US, with AT&T seemingly taking the lead, followed by Verizon, and then T-Mobile (Sprint was not part of the tests).
As for upload speeds, there were some improvements but it was marginal at best and not on the same scale compared to the download speeds. According to AppleInsider, this is largely thanks to Apple’s use of new Gigabit-class LTE with 4×4 MIMO technology and LAA, versus the iPhone X which used two LCP FCPBs to power 2×2 MIMO.
The faster LTE speeds are no doubt welcome, but with 5G expected to become more common and available in 2019, we’re sure that many are hoping to see Apple start to include support for 5G in its future iPhones.
