Google’s ‘Portals’ Could Change How We Surf The Web On Mobile

The way we browse the web on our phones versus on our computers are different. This is because our phones are designed differently, such as being smaller, and also running on different hardware, and also generally relying on touch input as its main input as opposed to using a keyboard and mouse.

For those who feel that maybe web browsing on mobile could stand to do with some improvements, it seems that’s what Google thinks as it appears that the company is working on a project called Portals that could change how we surf the web on our phones. The project is led by Kenji Baheux who is a Product Manager at Google, where the goal of Portals is try and create websites that will allow users to seamlessly navigate from one page to another using gestures, which hopefully will cut down time spent waiting for websites to load.

This is particularly important because as Amazon had said in the past, a page load slowdown of even 1 second could cost the company as much as $1.6 billion in sales each year, so it is obvious that the speed of which pages load is very critical, especially to retailers where users might simply hop onto a different and faster retailer for their needs.

That being said, don’t get your hopes up of seeing Portal launch anytime soon as it seems to be in proposal mode at the moment. It is also is still a bit unclear as to how different this will be from regular browsing, but if you’re interested you can find more information about the project on Github.

X-Men’s ‘Dark Phoenix’ Trailer Released

With Disney’s acquisition of Fox in the process, it means that assuming nothing goes wrong and the deal goes through, Fox’s ownership of some of Marvel’s franchises will be returning to Marvel (or Disney). This includes the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool, all of whom will be folded back into the MCU.

What this means is that the upcoming Dark Phoenix movie could possibly be the last X-Men movie we will see from Fox, and also the last time we see those actors play as those characters. That being said for those who are looking forward to it, the trailer for the movie has been released which you can check out in the video above.

For those unfamiliar, it is where Jean Grey is possessed by the Phoenix Force and becomes a completely different person and a villain. Fox had attempted to introduce the Dark Phoenix in previous X-Men movies, namely in X-Men: The Last Stand, although in this particular instance, it seems that it will be based on the X-Men characters back during their younger days.

Sophie Turner of Game of Thrones fame will be returning and starring as Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix, while James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender will be reprising their roles as Professor X and Magneto. Jennifer Lawrence will also be returning as Mystique. The Dark Phoenix movie was originally meant to be released this year, but it has since been pushed to February 2019.

Plex Announces Plans To Sunset More Features

The other day Plex announced that they would be shutting its Plex Cloud service down. For those unfamiliar, Plex’s Cloud service is where instead of users having to setup their own server to stream from, they can use Plex’s own server. Unfortunately it seems that Plex isn’t quite done with shutting down features.

The company has recently announced that they will be sunsetting some of its features. The company attributes this to how long the app has been around for, which means that over the years it has gained a ton of features that may no longer be used as much as before, so it makes no sense in keeping them around.

According to Plex, the features that are being sunsetted include plugins, “Watch Later”, and cloud sync. The company writes, “We didn’t approach the process lightly; we looked over usage numbers and took into account maintenance costs and general customer satisfaction. In some cases, we have plans for a future in which a better replacement shows up.”

If you haven’t been using those features for a while now, then it probably won’t affect you too much. For those who have, it seems like you’ll have no choice but to get used to it and hope that Plex eventually finds a better alternative that they’ll introduce in future updates.
