Google Confirms Project Dragonfly During Senate Hearing

Last month there were rumors that Google could be working on trying to get back into the Chinese market by launching a revamped search engine that would comply with local censorship laws and regulations. The project was given the codename Dragonfly in which Google has recently confirmed its existence.

However that was pretty much it, where Google’s confirmation was merely confirmation that a project called Dragonfly exists. This was confirmed by Google’s chief privacy officer Keith Enright during a Senate hearing in which he said that Google does have a project by that name, although he did not go into details as he claimed to be unclear on what the project is about. Enright was quoted as saying, “I am not clear on the contours of what is in scope or out of scope for that project.”

Google has since issued a response to VentureBeat about Enright’s statements during the hearing which reads, “We’ve been investing for many years to help Chinese users, from developing Android, through mobile apps such as Google Translate and Files Go, and our developer tools. But our work on search has been exploratory.”

Google has yet to officially come right out and confirm their plans on returning to China. However the speculation that they might has not stopped US lawmakers from wanting to know more. Companies such as Apple have in the past been questioned for caving in to China’s demands, and it also seems that Google’s employees aren’t too thrilled about the idea of a censored search engine and have protested the project internally.

iOS 12.1 Will Enable Dual SIM For The iPhone Xs, Xs Max

One of the highly-requested features for the iPhones is dual SIM, which Apple finally brought to the table with the iPhone Xs and Xs Max. However it seems that dual SIM isn’t quite ready yet as it seems that it will need to wait for the iOS 12.1 update before it is enabled, which means that you shouldn’t expect dual SIM support out of the box.

That being said, it should be noted that it isn’t quite as easy to get dual SIM functionality as you might think. For starters users will need to activate the eSIM on their iPhones once the iOS 12.1 update is released, which means you’ll have to scan a QR code or add additional information from your carrier before you can activate it, so even then you’ll need to go through additional steps.

This is mostly due to the fact that the new iPhones rely on an eSIM and physical SIM combination, whereas other phones have typically relied on dual physical SIM cards in which it is mostly a plug and play affair. However as is the case with new technology, it will be a tad cumbersome at the start.

There have been some who claim that Apple will help to boost adoption of eSIM technology due to the popularity of its iPhones. Whether or not that is true remains to be seen, but for the most part a lot of the world still relies on physical SIMs and it will probably be a while before we see eSIMs adopted. China’s version of the new iPhones will be the exception as they will support dual physical SIMs.

Back Market Will Now Sell Refurbished Drones

Flying a drone sure looks like fun, and if you’re a photographer or videographer, then you have probably seen the cool aerial shots that you could take using a drone, shots that you might not have otherwise been able to pull off save for hiring a helicopter. However drones don’t always come cheap which can be a bit off-putting for some.

The good news is that if you shop frequently on Back Market, then you’ll be pleased to learn that the online marketplace has announced that they will now start selling refurbished drones. For those who aren’t familiar, Back Market is an online marketplace known for selling refurbished electronics. There is a difference between second-hand and refurbished, where the latter is usually sold as-is, while refurbished means that it has been cleaned up and fixed before it is sold.

It still isn’t considered “new” per se, but it should be in relatively better condition. According to Thibaud Hug de Larauze, founder and CEO of Back Market, “Drones have reached a maturity level similar to mobile phones and computers that has resulted in a strong secondary market for refurbished models. Expanding into the refurbished drone market allows us to bring a more affordable option to hobbyists and professionals, but also gives consumers a reliable alternative to get ahead of the e-waste impact we will likely see as this market grows.”

Back Market will be selling various brands of drones including those from DJI. The company claims that the DJI Mavic Pro can be bought refurbished at 37% cheaper than a new model. It is possible that second-hand/used models could be cheaper, but if you wanted a used drone that is in better condition, then refurbished could be the way to go.
