LG V40 ThinQ Render Leaked

LG has recently confirmed that the LG V40 ThinQ will be officially unveiled on the 3rd of October. Now thanks to a tweet by Evan Blass, a render of the upcoming handset has been revealed which seems to confirm some of the rumors that we have heard about the handset so far.

One of the popular rumors is that the LG V40 ThinQ will be packing five cameras. No, there won’t be five cameras at the back, but rather there will be five cameras in total: three in the back and two in the front. As you can see in the render, this seems to be true, although we have to wonder if so many cameras are necessary anyway.

In terms of design, the LG V40 ThinQ will be keeping its edge-to-edge display design and even though there are two cameras in the front, which you might assume could be used for facial recognition, the phone appears to be keeping its fingerprint sensor on the back. Other than that it’s hard to tell what else is new, although AT&T’s name on the screen does indicate that the phone could either be exclusive to AT&T or that the carrier will be one of the phone’s launch partners.

In any case as a flagship phone, we expect that it will be packing Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chipset and given the ThinQ branding, it will feature some form of AI that should allow it to communicate with other ThinQ products.

Mozilla’s Firefox Monitor Lets You Know If Your Data Is Breached

It is a bit disappointing that despite the advancements we’ve made to technology that security is still lacking where we’re hearing about hacks and data breaches more times than we should. Given how entrenched our lives are with various online services, this something we should all strive to be aware about.

So much so that Mozilla has decided to launch a new online tool called Firefox Monitor. According to Mozilla’s description of the service, “We’re launching Firefox Monitor, a free service that notifies people when they’ve been part of a data breach. Check out Firefox Monitor to see if you’ve been part of a data breach, and sign up to know if you’ve been affected the next time a data breach happens.”

If this sounds familiar, it is because there is actually a service called “Have I Been Pwned” which essentially does the same thing. In this particular instance, Mozilla actually teamed up with Troy Hunt (who created “Have I Been Pwned”) for it. It will also work in a similar way where users just need to put in their email address and it will then check it against a database of existing data breaches.

For those wondering what the differences are, there really aren’t any. However with Mozilla’s Firefox having a much wider reach, it will help spread awareness and bring to attention instances in which your account’s data might have been breached, which you should then go and change your passwords and update your security information. For those who are interested, you can check out the tool here.

Panasonic Announces New Lumix S Full-Frame Mirrorless Cameras

For the longest time, Sony has pretty much dominated the full-frame mirrorless camera market as they were essentially the only ones who made such cameras. However in the past month or so, both Nikon and Canon have since come forward with their own full-frame offerings, but apparently that’s not all.

In an announcement by Panasonic, it looks like the company is also throwing their support behind full-frame mirrorless cameras by launching two brand new models: the Lumix S1 and the S1R. Now these aren’t just your typical “me too!” kind of announcements, and what’s interesting about them is that they were actually made in partnership with Leica.

The result of this partnership means that both these cameras will feature the use of Leica’s L-mount, meaning that users will be able to use compatible lenses with these cameras along with Panasonic’s own. Given that Panasonic and Leica have worked together for years, it doesn’t really come as a surprise.

In terms of specs, we’re looking at a 24MP sensor for the S1, and a 47MP for the S1R. They are also capable of 4K video recording, dual image stabilization which means one inside the camera and one for the lens. That being said, the new cameras aren’t quite ready yet which explains the lack of details, but they are expected to be launched in the spring of 2019 and more details should be revealed then.

Apple Watch Series 4’s Fall Detection Could Get You Arrested

One of the health benefits Apple touted of the Apple Watch Series 4 is its ability to detect falls. This means that in the event that you fall, the watch will be able to detect it and will require a prompt from the user, if not it will dial 911 to send someone to your location should you be seriously injured or unconscious.

It sounds good and useful, especially for senior citizens, but it also seems that it could result in the police searching your home and potentially arresting you. This was pointed out by law professor Elizabeth Joh who teaches at the University of California at Davis, who noted on Twitter (via Cult of Mac) that by calling 911, it invites the police to check on you, which in turn means that should you have any illegal items such as contraband in plainview, you could be arrested as a result.

According to Joh, “Consider: your watch (accidentally) alerts the police to check on you: 4th Amend. community caretaking exception means they can enter your home w/o a warrant. Plain view means they may seize contraband/evidence of a crime. Nice work, guys.” As it stands the Fourth Amendment prevents police/law enforcement from conducting unreasonable searches and seizures, but since the wearer dialled 911, they can’t argue that the police had searched their home illegally.

While no one is arguing against the usefulness of fall detection, some are now calling for Apple to modify the feature to call the user’s emergency contact instead, as opposed to dialing 911. Whether or not Apple will make these changes remains to be seen, although it should be noted that fall detection is disabled by default unless you’re aged 65 and above.
