NYPD Pulling Body Cameras After One Catches Fire

The New York City Police Department has been testing body cameras for its force since the past few years and aimed to equip every officer with one by next year. It may not be able to meet this goal as its now pulling all body cameras after one caught fire last night. A camera worn by an officer in Staten Island began smoking and “burst into flames,” according to the NYPD.

The NYPD has thus decided to pull them all pending the outcome of its investigation into the matter. This means that until it knows what caused that one camera to catch fire, the entire force equipped with this model will be without body cameras.

The body camera, in particular, is a Vievu model LE-5. An official told The Daily Beast that the camera “unexpectedly began to smoke and fell from his shirt to the ground.” The NYPD has said that it has been made aware of a possible defect in the camera while reiterating that nobody was hurt when the battery of this particular camera “exploded.”

Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill “has directed that the continued use and distribution of the LE-5 model cameras be suspended effective immediately.” The force is investigating the matter to ascertain the cause of this defect. The advisory also says that only officers with the LE-5 model will have to turn them in. Those using the LE-4 model can continue using it without any issues.

The USSV Rhino GX might just be the perfect family car

While it certainly doesn’t look like a minivan the Rhino GX, from US Specialty Vehicles, is actually well-suited to carting your kids to soccer practice, family road trips, driving the school carpool, or picking up the weekly groceries. No, it doesn’t exactly blend in like ever other SUV on the school run, or indeed like any sort of minivan you’ve … Continue reading

Google Pixel 3XL Does Well In Durability Test

Google’s Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are now out and customers who pre-ordered it have started receiving their units. If you’re as yet undecided then perhaps this Google Pixel 3 XL durability test will make the decision easier for you. YouTuber Zack Nelson from JerryRigEverything, the go-to channel for smartphone durability tests, has put the latest Google flagship through its paces.

The Pixel 3XL didn’t exhibit flexing in Nelson’s signature bend test for the device. This means that the device gets great marks for endurance but the same can’t be said for its scratch resistance.

You can see in the video that the rear fingerprint sensor is susceptible to scratching and then faces problems registering fingerprints once it has been badly scratched. The lower part of the back, the non-glossy one, is a bit of a scratch magnet as well.

It can get all scratched up quickly so some precautions will certainly go a long way. Limit the device’s exposure to keys and coins so don’t just chuck it in your bag or in your pocket without being careful. You could get rid of the aggravation and just buy a good case for the Pixel 3 XL to use it with. That should be enough to address the scratching problem.

DIY Portable Skee-Ball Machine Doesn’t Dispense Tickets

If there’s one game I always loved playing at Chuck E. Cheese’s when I was a kid, it was Skee-Ball. There’s just something so satisfying about rolling those balls down the ramp and into one of the point buckets – especially when the tickets come pouring out of the machine so you can redeem them for fabulous prizes. While this homemade Skee-Ball machine forgoes the ticket dispenser, it still looks like a bunch of fun.

Instructables contributor Seamster created this Skee-Ball machine on wheels, so it can be rolled out during parties, and then put away when not in use. What’s cool about it is that it was primarily constructed using reclaimed items, including old metal bed frames, rubber mud flaps from a truck, road signs, a chalkboard, and scrap wood.

It appears that the only new bits are the 3″ flexible drain pipes and used for the ball return system. For the balls, he used those baseball practice balls, but I think I’d want the real wood composite balls if they weren’t so damned expensive. And lest you think it would be hard to keep track of your score, this machine has a built-in ball sorter tray, which indicates how many points each ball scored. Smart!

This is such a great build, and something I’d love to have in my home arcade someday. If you’re like me and want your own Skee-Ball machine, head on over to Instructables to check out the full build instructions, including parts lists and templates.

Marvel’s Luke Cage Canceled By Netflix

Netflix is ditching some of its Marvel original series. Merely a week after the streaming giant announced that it won’t bring back Iron Fist for a third season, Netflix has confirmed that similar decision has been made for Luke Cage. There will be no third season of Marvel’s Luke Cage.

The second season of Luke Cage was released earlier this year. The presumption among fans was that it would be renewed for another season so that the story can move forward. That’s not going to be the case now.

Netflix and Marvel have confirmed to Deadline that Luke Cage is not going to return for a third season. They have taken many by surprise with this decision as it was expected that at least Luke Cage will survive to get to the third season.

It’s not surprising to see that Netflix and Marvel’s partnership is cooling off a bit. Disney has been working on its own streaming service which will take on Netflix. Disney will obviously want to leverage its catalog of original content to bring in subscribers which is one of the reasons why it decided to end its distribution deal with Netflix in 2017.

Some Marvel series remain on the platform, though. The third season of Daredevil was recently launched and both Jessica Jones and The Punisher have been renewed for a season each.
