Apple ditches the headphone jack on latest iPad Pro models

The headphone jack is missing from the latest versions of the iPad Pro. It’s gone. Dead. Worse yet, the headphones that come with the iPhone will not work either. Apple ditched Lightning for USB-C. Instead, Apple is selling a USB-C to 3.5mm dongle for $9.

The latest iPad Pro models follows the trend lines set by the iPhone. Just like on the iPhone, the Home Button is missing, and the headphone jack is gone. It’s a concession some users might find surprising. On the iPhone, there’s obviously less real estate to integrate a large port but that’s, in theory, less of an issue in a large device like a tablet. But it makes sense. Apple tends to maximize margins by ensuring different products use a similar set of hardware. And since the iPhone hasn’t had a headphone port since 2016, it’s about time the trend hits Apple’s other mobile device.

Headphone users are not the only users left in the dark. The iPad has long been a great device for a stationary audio controller. Now, instead of simply connecting the tablet to a stereo with a 3.5mm cable, a $9 dongle is required. Want to use headphones? Apple would obviously prefer if owners use $159 AirPods though there are a handful of USB-C headphones including these from Google.

NASA Kepler spacecraft dies after nine years of planet hunting

NASA made a sad announcement this afternoon: its planet hunting spacecraft Kepler has been retired after running out of fuel. Scientists knew this day was coming, having first revealed the low-fuel state to the public this past summer. Researchers took steps to conserve the remaining fuel, including strategic use of hibernation states, but the fateful day has already arrived. Kepler … Continue reading

How To Find And Hide The Location Where A Photo Was Taken

Being able to see where a photo was taken can come in handy on multiple occasions. Though, under certain circumstances, one could also prefer to hide this information from public view.

In this tutorial, we are going to be showing you how to access and hide a photo’s location information on both mobile and desktop.

How to see/hide a photo’s location on Windows and Mac

The process is quite simple. On Windows:

  1. Import the photo from your phone
  2. Right click on the image file, then click on properties
  3. Click on Details and scroll down until you find GPS
  4. There you will find the photo’s GPS coordinates, which are stored as metadata embedded in the photo file

On Mac:

  1. Right-click the image file
  2. Click on ‘Get Info’
  3. GPS coordinates will be available under the ‘More Info’ section

To hide the GPS coordinates, you can click on the ‘Remove Properties and Personal Information’ option, and from there select specific personal information about the photo which you wish to keep private.

How to disable location-tracking on your phone’s camera: Android and iOS

On Android:

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Open the Permission tab
  3. Open the ‘Location’ tab
  4. Find the Camera app and toggle it off

On iOS:

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Select the Privacy tab
  3. Tap on the ‘Location Services’ tab
  4. Open the Camera section
  5. Select ‘Never’ for the ‘Allow Location Access’ option

Check out the photo’s GPS coordinates on Google Maps

As we mentioned at the beginning of this tutorial, one could actually make use of the GPS metadata.

Head up to Google Maps and type in the coordinates in the search bar. Google has a quite comprehensive post explaining the proper syntax for coordinates.

It is worth noting here, that sometimes the GPS metadata embedded in the photo file can be stunningly inaccurate. For instance, for a photo that I recently snapped, the GPS coordinates embedded in it point to a place in Turkey, while the photo was actually taken in Greece. Just something to have in mind.

If you encounter any problems while trying out the above or have a recommendation to make, feel free to shoot a comment down below.

Can Apple finish 2018 on a high note? We’ll find out Thursday

Apple (NASDAQ: APPL) has had a great 2018.

Even as the other FAANG stocks slumped, the trillion-dollar electronics company has continually satisfied Wall Street with quarter-over-quarter revenue growth. But will Apple’s momentum continue after it reports its fourth-quarter earnings on Thursday?

The consensus, so far, is yes. Apple is expected to post revenue of $61.43 billion (earnings per share of $2.78), an increase of 17 percent year-over-year and GAAP EPS of $2.78, according to analysts polled by FactSet. Investors will be paying close attention to iPhone unit sales, which account for the majority of Apple’s revenue, as well as Mac sales, which accounted for roughly 10 percent of the company’s revenue in Q3.

The company reported its Q3 earnings on July 31, posting $53.3 billion in revenue, its best June quarter ever and fourth consecutive quarter of double-digit revenue growth, the company said.

At today’s hardware event in Brooklyn, Apple’s chief executive officer Tim Cook shared that the company’s Mac business had grown to 100 million monthly active users — a big accomplishment for the nearly 10-year-old product. Cook also showcased the new MacBook Air and introduced the new iPad Pro and Mac Mini.

Not even Lana Del Rey’s surprise performance at the event was enough to rile up Wall Street. Apple’s stock was unreactive today, as is typically the case with hardware spectacles like these. Apple ultimately closed up about .5 percent. That’s a better outcome than its last hardware event in September, which despite the highly anticipated announcements of the iPhone XS and Apple Watch Series 4, forced the company’s stock down about 1.2 percent on the news.

Apple’s stock performance year to date

Year to date, Apple’s stock has risen more than 30 percent from a February low of $155 per share to an October high of $229.

If it fails to meet analyst expectations on Thursday, it’s bad news for the stock market: “Apple is the last domino standing,” Market Watch wrote earlier today. “Its FAANG brethren have all crashed, even the mighty Amazon, which has slumped about 25% from all-time highs.”

If you missed today’s event, we live-blogged the whole thing here and detailed all the new hardware here.

Old Apple Pencil Isn’t Compatible With New iPad Pro

Wondering whether your old Apple Pencil will work with your brand new iPad Pro? You’re out of luck. You’ll have to purchase a new stylus for your new tablet. It will not be possible to use the first generation Apple Pencil with this generation of the iPad Pro.

The new iPad Pro unveiled today is Apple’s first tablet to ship with a USB Type-C port. It no longer has a Lightning port. The previous Apple Pencil had to be charged through the Lightning Port which isn’t present on this device.

The iPad Pro can now charge the Apple Pencil wirelessly. Magnets attach the stylus to the side of the tablet from where it’s charged wirelessly. That’s not the only major difference between the two generations of Pencil. The original one can’t be used with this new iPad while the newest Apple Pencil can’t be used with earlier iPad Pro models.

Customers who have grown accustomed to using the Apple Pencil or require on it extensively to get work done on the move, then they should keep in mind that they have to budget for the new Apple Pencil as well when picking up the new iPad Pro. It costs $129. In case you’re wondering, the new Apple Pencil costs $30 more than its predecessor.
