Facebook has been investing considerably in original video content recently and it’s now going the nostalgia route to get more people to watch its content. The world’s largest social network has teamed up with MTV to bring The Real World back to life. The once popular reality TV show will have a second coming. The company says that viewers will experience a “reimagined” version of the show on Facebook Watch.
The confirmation came today at the MIPCOM trade show in Cannes, France. This is one of the first original Facebook shows that was previously a conventional show on cable. It’s different from the bulk of the programming on Facebook Watch now that largely includes documentaries and news.
“The Real World made history as the world’s first original reality show and trailblazing social experiment — and we’re thrilled to reboot the show for today’s audiences — representing and amplifying the real life, real people, real places and real social tensions of each country,” said Facebook’s head of content planning and strategy Matthew Henick.
A premiere date has not yet been confirmed but it would be at some point in spring 2019. The show is going to be spread across continents. The seasons will be location-specific with casts in the United States, Mexico, and Thailand.
It remains to be seen how the revamped The Real World will be received by fans. Facebook is obviously looking to capitalize on the brand value of this popular show which had a big fan base back in its day.
