Speck’s GrabTab is a revolutionary grip assist accessory

speck-grabtabSpeck has churned out accessories for mobile devices for quite some time now, and most of them are limited to smartphone and tablet cases that offer protection accompanied by style. This time around, Speck has revealed their all-new super slim grip assist accessory known as the GrabTab. The GrabTab was specially designed in order to deliver a secure hold on devices regardless of their size, without having it impede any of the other functions of the smartphone it is attached to. Sporting a comfortable holding loop, this holding loop has dual functionality since it also doubles up as a convenient phone stand for on-the-go entertainment.

A normal grip assist accessory is common and extremely affordable, but its major drawback would be having additional bulk on a device. This in turn makes it difficult to pull the device in and out of a pocket or other small spaces such as a handbag. Apart from that, many times the standard issue grip accessory would get in the way of Qi wireless charging capabilities, which would then turn such a popular and important device feature redundant. The GrabTab solves both of these challenges by the simple fact that it is credit card-sized while measuring a mere 3mm thin, helping to maintain the sleek body of today’s modern handsets while ensuring the continuity of full compatibility with wireless charging.

Installing and using the GrabTab is a snap. This particular accessory will adhere firmly to the back of the device’s case, where the flexible strip manually slides up in order to lock into place so that it can create a finger-sized loop which is comfortable and easy to grip. When engaged, the GrabTab provides a comfortable and secure hold each time you are on the move, snapping selfies, sending text messages or updating your social media profile, among others. The loop also functions as a stand which can prop the device on its side, coming in handy when you need to watch videos, read the news or simply carrying out a video chat with friends.

Such a universal design allows the GrabTab to work with most smartphone cases and devices. With an asking price of just $9.95 apiece, this is certainly an extremely affordable accessory that anyone can pick up to be more productive on the move.

Apple Officially Introduces A Brand New MacBook Air

Ever since Apple introduced the 12-inch Retina MacBook, it felt that the company had quietly announced that the MacBook Air would be going the way of the dinosaur. However in recent months we have been hearing rumors that Apple could be launching a brand new model, and sure enough at Apple’s event today, they have announced a brand new MacBook Air.

One of the main differences made to the MacBook Air on the surface would be its design to its display, where it now sports black bezels around the border around the display, getting rid of the aluminum bezel in the process and making the overall bezels 50% narrower. Speaking of display, Apple has also finally introduced Retina Display to the MacBook Air, making text and images sharper than before, and also featuring 48% more color.

The laptop will also come with Touch ID built into the keyboard of the laptop, a feature that was primarily only available in Apple’s higher-end MacBook Pro laptop lineup which will also be powered by the T2 secure enclave chip. This is the same T2 chip that can be found in the iMac Pro and the 2018 MacBook Pros.

Speaking of keyboards, the MacBook Air will feature a third-gen butterfly design keyboard with individual backlit illuminated keys. The laptop will also come with the same touchpad used in Apple’s newer laptops which will rely on haptic feedback to simulate the clicks found on the older touchpad design.

Apple is also boasting improved audio performance where it is 25% louder, 2x more bass, stereo sound, and a three microphone array that will help improve voice calls and also makes Siri understand you easier. As expected, the new MacBook Airs has done away with pretty much all the legacy ports and will instead feature two Thunderbolt 3 ports.

As for the rest of the specs, the laptop will be powered by Intel’s 8th-gen dual-core CPU and will support up to 16GB of RAM, 1.5TB of SSD that Apple claims is 60% faster than before, and will also boast 12 hours of battery life for web browsing. Apple has also managed to made the laptop smaller where it has 17% less volume than the previous model, and will also measure 15.6mm thin, 10% thinner than the previous model, and will weigh 2.75lbs.

In terms of pricing, the new MacBook Air will be priced starting at $1,199 and is available for pre-order with a release set for the 7th of November.

The Best of NASA JPL’s Pumpkin Carving Contest 2018

The engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Labs have a pumpkin carving contest each year, and the pumpkins the creative ideas these rocket scientists come up with run the gamut from pop culture to space themed. My favorite design this year is the E.T. pumpkin:

But I also like the or the one with a skull inside a pumpkin like an astronaut. It’s pretty morbid considering NASA puts men into space, but it is awesome. I totally fail to get the one of the white pumpkin eating a satellite. Feel free to explain that one.

Other pumpkins on hand included a family of colorful sharks, and a barfing Cookie Monster among others. Take a closer look at this year’s contest entries on the NASA JPL Flickr page.

There are now 100 million Macs in use

During its press event in Brooklyn, Apple CEO Tim Cook shared some numbers on the Mac in particular. The active install base of all Macs is currently 100 million.

“People love the Mac and they use it to create all kinds of amazing things every day,” Cook said.

Obviously this number is much smaller than the iPhone install base, but it’s also a smaller market overall. More important than the number of active Macs, Apple is still converting a lot of new users to the Mac.

51 percent of Mac customers are new users overall. And in China in particular, 76 percent of buyers are buying a Mac for the first time.

Cook didn’t say how many Mac people are buying a Windows computer because Apple has been really slow when it comes to Mac updates. Maybe it’ll change today.

“Of course, one of the drivers for Mac’s high customer satisfaction is macOS,” Cook said before recapping some of the new features in macOS Mojave. PC makers have stepped up their game. It’s clear that macOS remains the best thing in the Mac.
