Star Wars Darth Vader Clapper: Turn on Your Lights with the Dark Side

Clap on, clap off. The Clapper! The Clapper was a pretty cheesy 80s invention that allowed you to turn your lights on and off by clapping. I’m guessing it hasn’t sold so well in recent years. How do we cure this? With a Darth Vader version of the clapper, obviously. Now Star Wars fans can use the power of The Dark Side to turn their lights on and off.

Force clapping (aka regular clapping) can now control your lights, and every time you use it you will hear the voice of Darth Vader. Clap on and he says “The Force is strong with this one.” Clap off and he says “You underestimate the power of the Dark Side.”

No worries about accidentally turning your lights off and on at the end of The Last Jedi when you and your friends applaud like crazy. That has never happened anywhere that I’m aware of. Just be careful when watching other movies that you don’t clap and turn the lights out.

This is a must for any geek who loves Vader and the original trilogy as much as I do. You can pre-order yours now from Entertainment Earth for $29.99, with shipments starting in November 2018.

Huawei Watch GT Smartwatch Launched

Huawei has been dabbling in smartwatches for the past few years, with 2017 bringing us the Huawei Watch 2. Now it looks like the company is back with a third iteration of its smartwatch in the form of the Huawei Watch GT, a watch that we’ve been hearing about for a while now based on various leaks and rumors, some of which have since been confirmed at Huawei’s event in London.

While there are plenty of smartwatches in the market, Huawei’s smartwatches have typically stood out from the rest by offering a somewhat more “mature” design. For those who want a watch that can be somewhat dressy but yet suitable for day-to-day, the Huawei Watch GT will no disappoint. It will feature the use of a ceramic bezel, a diamond-like coating on the glass, and will also sport a stainless steel case, with a 1.39-inch display.

It will also use an AMOLED screen with a 454 x 454 resolution, and it will be powered by a new dual chipset architecture. What does this mean? Basically there will be a lower-speed chip and a high-speed one. However thanks to the use of AI, the smartwatch will be able determine which sensor to use, thus helping users conserve battery when not-so-intense processing is required (this is similar in concept to the big.LITTLE architecture).

There will also be a brand new heart rate monitoring system dubbed the Huawei TruSeen 3.0 that uses a self-learning algorithm that will be able to collect better fitness data. There will also be the usual host of sensors that includes an accelerometer, gyroscope, a compass, GPS, an altimeter, and an air pressure sensor.

Huawei is also boasting that its smartwatch will feature 2 weeks of battery life with heart rate monitoring and up to 90 minutes of exercise per week. This is huge as battery life is a huge deal when it comes to choosing a smartwatch. That being said, the Huawei Watch GT will not run on Google’s Wear OS platform and will instead run on its own software.

This can be viewed as either a good or bad thing where a proprietary software means Huawei can do with it as they please. The downside is that it won’t have access to the plethora of apps that Wear OS has, but if you’re happy with what the watch does by itself, then maybe this isn’t that big of a deal.

Facebook Developing TV Camera For Video Calls And Streaming

It appears Facebook is about to get a lot more serious about hardware. Not long after it launched its Portal video calling devices, it’s being reported that the company is working on a TV camera which will allow users to make video calls using the biggest screen in their house. Not only that, the device may also enable users to stream content from Facebook Watch on their TV.

This camera-equipped device is reportedly going to sit on top of a TV and allow video calling and access to Facebook Watch, the company’s dedicated hub for video content. The project is said to use the same core technology as the Portal device. It uses artificial intelligence to detect and follow people automatically as they move in the frame during the video call.

Facebook hasn’t said anything about such a device at this point in time. The report claims that the company is aiming to launch this product in the spring of next year. Since the device is still in development the date could be changed.

No word as yet on what this device might cost. It will enable Facebook to establish a footing in a market that has largely been dominated by the likes of Amazon, Roku, and Google with their affordable streaming products. The kicker here would be that Facebook’s device will let users make video calls as well.
