Apple Watch To Be Used To Study Patients With Knee & Hip Replacements

Apple had previously conducted a clinical study with the Apple Watch on how it might be able to better detect and analyze the wearer’s heart rate. We had also heard that they are planning on donating Apple Watches to a study on binge eating, and it looks like Apple is nowhere close to slowing down.

A report from CNBC has revealed that Apple will be teaming up with Zimmer Biomet for a new clinical study which will see the Apple Watch used to monitor/study patients who have had common knee and/or hip replacement procedures. With an estimated 1 million Americans getting knee and hip replacements a year, and with Zimmer Biomet being one of the biggest manufacturers of reconstructive products, it makes sense that this is an area that Apple might be interested in.

The Apple Watch will be used to help track the steps and heart rate data of patients, which in turn will see that information shared with doctors to give them a better idea of how they’re doing after surgery. For example the number of steps taken could be used to gauge whether or not a patient is experiencing pain, and whether that pain is coming from the procedure or if it could simply be overexertion.

It will be interesting to see what will become of this study, and how the Apple Watch could eventually be updated with new features that cater to such patients. The Apple Watch Series 4 came with some pretty huge improvements over its predecessor, such as fall detection and a built-in ECG monitor.

Adobe Announces ‘Real’ Photoshop Coming To The iPad In 2019

Adobe’s photo and image editing apps have always been available on mobile devices, although they are usually slightly different compared to their desktop counterparts, where they usually offer up the very basic features for light editing on the go. However that will change in 2019 as Adobe will be launching the “real” Photoshop experience on the iPad.

According to Adobe, this particular version of Photoshop is said to be the same as its desktop counterpart, except that its interface has been redesigned for mobile. “Redesigned for a modern touch experience, Photoshop CC on iPad will deliver the power and precision of its desktop counterpart. Photoshop CC on iPad will let users open and edit native PSD files using Photoshop’s industry-standard image-editing tools and will feature the familiar Photoshop layers panel.”

There have been some reviews in the past of Adobe’s mobile editing platforms, such as Lightroom, where some reviews have praised the app for its speed and performance which is much better compared to the desktop version. It’s hard to tell if this version of Photoshop will be just as fast, but given that the app is only due for a launch next year we imagine that there is still some work left to be done.

There was also no mention of pricing where it is unclear if Adobe plans on selling the app via a one-off purchase, or if it might require a Creative Cloud subscription which is more or less how they are selling their software these days, and if customers who are already subscribed will get a copy of the mobile version at no extra charge.

Analyst Thinks iPhone XR Will Have A ‘Better Than Expected’ Demand

Apple’s new iPhones are expensive, with the iPhone Xs Max priced over $1,000. While there will always be a demand for iPhones, the price points will definitely put some customers off, and this is why analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that this could potentially lead to better than expected demand for the iPhone XR.

For those unfamiliar, the iPhone XR is the LCD model of Apple’s 2018 lineup. It is priced starting at $750 which isn’t exactly “cheap” per se, but it is a more affordable model. Plus for the most part it has the same hardware as the iPhone Xs and Xs Max, save for the display type and the camera, but otherwise it will be powered by the same chipset, have Face ID, and so on.

According to Kuo’s predictions, Apple is expected to ship 36 to 38 million iPhone XR units in the fourth quarter of the year, up from 33 to 35 million units from his earlier prediction. Of course shipping numbers doesn’t necessarily translate into actual sales, so it should probably be taken with a grain of salt for now.

Kuo also claims that the iPhone XR could outsell the iPhone 8 from 2017 which was Apple’s slightly more affordable take on the iPhone compared to the iPhone X back then. Whether or not this holds true remains to be seen, but Kuo had also previously stated that Apple is expected to maintain its LCD iPhones even in 2019.
