Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III Could Be Launched Early 2019

While there is a lot of focus on mirrorless cameras these days, there is still very much a thriving market for compacts. There are plenty of uses for compacts, such as by professionals who want a pocketable backup camera. It can also be used by those who want a camera but don’t want to be burdened by additional expenses like buying lenses, and it could also appeal to those who just want a camera that isn’t their phone.

Now Canon’s Canon PowerShot G7 X is a camera that is well-known to many, and if you are looking forward to the latest model, which presumably will be the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III, you might not have to wait too long because according to Canon Rumors, they have heard that the Mark III could be launched in early 2019, possibly at CES 2019 where we usually see a fair number of camera announcements.

Details about the Mark III are scarce at this point in time, but Canon Rumors says that their sources have told them that focus of the camera will be that of a premium compact that might also appeal to vloggers. There is also rumored to be support for 4K videos, dual pixel autofocus, a new sensor, redesigned ergonomics, and also possibly a longer zoom.

Right now cameras like the Sony RX100 series are pretty popular amongst vloggers so it will be interesting to see if the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III could snatch the crown away from Sony, but given that we have no official information yet, take it with a grain of salt for now.

Developers Find iPhone XR’s Portrait Mode Can Be Improved Upon

One of the key differences between the iPhone XR and the iPhone Xs is in the camera. The iPhone Xs features dual cameras while the iPhone XR features a single camera, but yet for the most part the cameras all have similar functionality, including Portrait mode where the iPhone XR relies largely on software to mimic the same effects.

For the most part the single camera gets the job done just fine, but as some have noticed, it’s not as effective when it comes to snapping photos of non-humans, such as pets. The good news is that this is a software limitation that could potentially be overcome, as noted on Reddit (via 9to5Mac) by the Halide developers who discovered that there is enough depth data that could allow Portrait mode on the iPhone XR to snap photos of non-humans.

According to the developers, “And would you know it, we have Portrait Mode working on pets! We think with some more tooling, we’ll be able to ship a version of our app that enables portrait mode for all sorts of things. It seems it’ll be a bit more ‘temperamental’; in some settings it won’t work if there’s not enough variance in relative distance of objects, but a can of soda water on my desk worked just fine.”

While it seems that third-party apps will be able to take advantage of it, the potential good news is that Apple could further tweak and improve on the camera software so that users won’t have to rely on third-party apps, but whether or not they do remains to be seen.
