Super Mario Run Has Been Downloaded Nearly 300 Million Times

While Miitomo was essentially the first Nintendo game released for mobile, it was Super Mario Run that felt like it was the first “proper” by Nintendo to be released on mobile. Safe to say that excitement surrounding the game was pretty high, but when it was released, there were a few who were disappointed by it.

However it seems despite that, the game has continued being downloaded over the past two years where according to Nintendo’s latest financials, the company is claiming that Super Mario Run has been downloaded nearly 300 million times in the past two years since the game was first released.

According to Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, “It has been almost two years since the release of Super Mario Run, but the number of downloads still continues to grow and the application is now installed on nearly 300 million devices around the world. Downloads in countries outside of Japan continue and now account for over 90% of the total.”

This is quite impressive when you consider that it was in 2017 that the game was sitting at 150 million downloads. However despite this, Nintendo had previously admitted that the game isn’t as profitable as they would have liked. The game is free to download where gamers can access limited content, but will have to fork out $10 to unlock everything, which is what put many gamers off in the first place.

Nomad releases a stunning wireless charging pad with Apple Watch dock

With Apple’s AirPower still missing in action, the Apple accessory ecosystem has been attempting to fill the need with similar products. Some of these third party products are better than others, and the new Base Station from Nomad looks to be the best of them all.

The Base Station does two things. One, it wireless charges up to two mobile devices. Two, it charges an Apple Watch through an integrated Apple MFi-certified Magnetic Apple Watch charger. More so, it looks great.

A padded leather surface covers three charging coils allowing the unit to recharge up to two devices — or one device laying horizontally across the pad. Each of the coils are Qi-certified and output at 7.5W. As for the Apple Watch, it can only be recharged using the included magnetic charger unless Apple activates Qi-compatibility through a software update.

The Nomad Base Station is available now for $120. Don’t have an Apple Watch? The same charging base is available for $20 less and still supports up to three devices.

Nintendo To Continue Maintaining Its 3DS Lineup

When the Nintendo Switch was officially revealed where the console was positioned as a console that could be used for home gaming and also gaming on the go, many were wondering what this meant for Nintendo’s 3DS handheld lineup. Would it eventually be discontinued in favor of the Switch?

Perhaps that time could eventually come, but it won’t be anytime soon. During Nintendo’s recent financials (via Nintendo Everything), the company’s president Shuntaro Furukawa said that they will be continuing to maintain its 3DS lineup. Furukawa says that pricing is one of the reasons why they believe that the 3DS won’t be replaced by the Switch yet as it represents an entry point for customers looking to get into the Nintendo ecosystem.

According to Furukawa, “Nintendo 3DS is set apart from Nintendo Switch by its characteristics as a handheld game system that is lightweight, price-friendly, and highly portable. Affordability is the strong point that positions Nintendo 3DS in a niche clearly separate from Nintendo Switch. In the grand scheme of things, Nintendo 3DS has a prominent position as the product that can be served as the first contact between Nintendo and many of its consumers, and for this reason we will keep the business going.”

This isn’t the first time that the idea of replacing the 3DS with the Switch has been floated, although former Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima stated that the company would only phase out the 3DS once the Switch becomes a one-person-one-system console.

LEGO Ideas Pop-Up Storybook Goes Into Production

LEGO wrote the book on building blocks and now building blocks are making the LEGO book. Things have come full circle. I mean brick. Check out these official product shots of the $70 ‘Once Upon A Brick’ pop-up LEGO storybook that will be released on November 1st.

The set started out life as a design seeking support on the LEGO Ideas website, and after jumping over all of the requisite hurdles, it can finally be a real life set. The production version is an 859-piece kit with enough bricks to build a storybook that contains either a Little Red Riding Hood or Jack and the Beanstalk themed pop-up scene inside. You can swap between the two. Pretty cool.

You can even build a scene of your own when you get tired of the two that are provided for you in the box. This LEGO set also includes a booklet with a short history of pop-up books, a condensed history of each fairy tale in the set, and information about its fan designers and LEGO designers.

It arrives just in time for Christmas so this one should be under many trees this year, or if you’re a LEGO collector yourself, you should definitely book your LEGO literature today.

Khashoggi Was Strangled On Entering Consulate, Istanbul’s Chief Prosecutor Says

The Washington Post journalist went missing on Oct. 2.

The Google Home Hub is deeply insecure

Security advocate Jerry Gamblin has posted a set of instructions – essentially basic lines of XML – that can easily pull important information off of the Google Home Hub and, in some cases, temporarily brick the device.

The Home Hub, which is essentially an Android tablet attached to a speaker, is designed to act as an in-room Google Assistant. This means it connects to Wi-Fi (and allows you to see open Wi-Fi access points near the device), receives video and photos from other devices (and broadcasts its pin), and accepts commands remotely (including a quick reboot via the command line).

The command – which consists of a simple URL call via the command line – is clearly part of the setup process. You can try this at home if you replace “hub” with the Home Hub’s local IP address.

curl -Lv -H Content-Type:application/json --data-raw '{"params":"now"}' http://hub:8008/setup/reboot

Other one-liners expose further data, including a number of micro services:

$ curl -s http://hub:8008/setup/eureka_info | jq

Finally, this line causes all devices on your network to forget their Wi-Fi, forcing you to reenter the setup process.

nmap --open -p 8008 192.168.1.0/24 | awk '/is up/ {print up}; {gsub (/(|)/,""); up = $NF}' | xargs -I % curl -Lv -H Content-Type:application/json --data-raw '{ "wpa_id": 0 }' http://%:8008/setup/forget_wifi

As Gamblin notes, these holes aren’t showstoppers but they are very alarming. Allowing unauthenticated access to these services is lazy at best and dangerous at worst. He also notes that these endpoints have been open for years on various Google devices, which means this is a regular part of the code base and not considered an exploit by Google.

Again, nothing here is mission critical – no Home Hub will ever save my life – but it would be nice to know that devices based on the platform have some modicum of security, even in the form of authentication or obfuscation. Today we can reboot Grandpa’s overcomplicated picture frame with a single line of code but tomorrow we may be able to reboot Grandpa’s oxygen concentrator.

watchOS 5.1 update pulled by Apple after major problems surface

Generally speaking, applying a new software update to one of your expensive devices isn’t usually a major risk. There’s always the potential for bugs, of course, but those aren’t normally severe. Every once in a while, however, a software update comes around and causes major problems for end users, and unfortunately, some Apple Watch users are being reminded of this … Continue reading
