Facebook Launches First $6 Million Fund To Train Journalists

Facebook today announced that it’s launching a £4.5 million or $6 million fund to train nearly 80 new local journalists in the United Kingdom as part of a new “Community News Project.” Facebook says that the aim behind this initiative is to encourage reporting from towns where local newspapers and reporters have become a rare commodity.

Facebook is the primary source of news for many people across the globe. It aims to support local publishers with this initiative and for that reason it has launched this Community News Project.

The $6 million fund will be used to support local journalism in the United Kingdom. The National Council for the Training of Journalists, Facebook’s partner on this initiative, will oversee the recruitment of around 80 trainee community journalists. They will be placed at local newsrooms on a two year scheme.

All of the community journalists will have access to a full training program from the NCTJ while they’re working. Those trainees who don’t have the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism will receive training to get the required qualification. Those who already have it will work towards a new National Qualification in Journalism for community journalists. They will also receive training from Facebook on digital newsgathering skills.

Whether or not Facebook will launch similar programs in other key markets remains to be seen.

Nokia 106 Feature Phone Launched With All-Day Battery Life

While smartphones have become the defacto way in terms of communications, there are plenty of users around the world who might not have the money for a smartphone, which explains why 10 years after Apple revitalized the smartphone industry, there are still feature phones being produced and sold.

In fact HMD Global has recently announced their latest device in the form of the Nokia 106. As you can see in the image above, the Nokia 106 is pretty straightforward in terms of its design. It’s not exactly feature-rich, but what it does have going for itself is its battery life, where according to HMD, it boasts 15.7 hours of battery that will last the user all day.

Note that the 15.7 hours is for active use, meaning that if you don’t use your phone that much during the day, there is a chance that it could end up lasting you for the next few days, but then again your mileage may vary. The phone will feature a 1.8-inch 160×120 display, will be capable of storing up to 2,000 contacts, and retain as many as 500 SMS messages. The Nokia 106 is expected to launch in various markets around the world, with pricing varying between markets, but unfortunately the US is not one of them.
