Disc-less Xbox One Rumored For Launch In 2019

When it comes to consoles like the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, gamers have the option of choosing between purchasing physical or digital games. There are benefits to both, where some might prefer physical for its collectibility and artwork, while others prefer digital because it’s easier to manage.

However Microsoft could soon take those choices away from gamers, at least according to a report from Thurrott in which apparently Microsoft will be launching an updated Xbox One console in 2019, with the main kicker being that it might be disc-less. This means that this particular console update will only support digital games.

So the question is, what about gamers who have bought mostly physical titles? If the report is true, Microsoft could also be launching a “disc-to-digital” program where you take your games to a participating retailer, and they will let you exchange it for a digital version of the game. The goal here is to launch a potentially cheaper version of the Xbox One, where Microsoft could shave off as much as $100, making it just under $200.

It is unclear if this will be how Microsoft treats all future Xbox consoles moving forwards, but with digital downloads on the rise, we suppose a future where all game releases are purely digital wouldn’t be out of the question, but until then take this report with a grain of salt for now.

Google Releases ‘Age Of Sail’ Film In VR

Virtual reality (VR) is expected to be one of the futures of entertainment. Google themselves have been dabbling in the technology and to showcase how VR can be enjoyed, Google Spotlight Stories has since released a new film for VR called “Age of Sail”. The short is directed by Academy Award winner John Kahrs who also behind the popular Disney Paperman short.

According to the description of the film, “Set on the open ocean in 1900, Age of Sail is the story of William Avery (voiced by Ian McShane), an old sailor adrift and alone in the North Atlantic. When Avery reluctantly rescues Lara, who has mysteriously fallen overboard, he finds redemption and hope in his darkest hours.”

The film is available for free via the Google Spotlight Stories app on both iOS and Android. It is also available on the Viveport and Steam for those who prefer watching on the PC. Also if you don’t have a VR headset ready, not to worry because Google has also released a theatrical version (see video above) that you can watch normally and just enjoy the overall story, although we imagine that watching it in VR will probably help make it feel more immersive.

If you have about 12 minutes or so to spare, and have a simple VR device like the Google Cardboard, perhaps this could be worth checking out.
