Uber Rewards Program Launched To Provide Special Benefits

Days after Lyft announced the launch of a rewards program for riders, Uber today announced a similar program. Uber Rewards is not just limited to the ride-hailing service. Users will earn rewards points on both Uber and Uber Eats. The program will offer special benefits that users will be able to unlock as rewards.

Blue, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond are the four membership levels in Uber Rewards. Anyone can sign up to join at no additional cost. Once they’re in the program, they earn one point for every eligible dollar spent on UberPool and Uber Eats orders, two points for UberX, UberXL, Select, and Wav as well as three points for Black and Black SUV. Once they earn 500 points, they will advance from Blue to Gold.

They can then advance to Platinum once they have 2,500 points while 7,500 points are required to achieve Diamond status. Earnings periods are six months long and are tied to the user’s sign up date. When a tier is unlocked users have that tier for the remaining earnings period and the next six months.

Uber Rewards members will have $5 added to their Uber Cash balance for every 500 points earned regardless of the membership tier. The cash balance can be spent on both rides and food through Uber Eats. Gold members get flexible cancellations, they can cancel eligible Uber trips within 15 minutes for no charge. Platinum members get all benefits that Gold members do plus price protection on route and priority pickups at most airports.

Diamond is the highest membership tier. It included all of the aforementioned benefits in addition to dedicated phone support, complimentary surprise upgrades from UberX to Uber Black at no extra charge, and a special UberX Diamond option which will give them access to highly rated drivers. Diamond members also get no delivery fee on three Uber Eats orders every six months.

Uber Rewards starts in Miami, New Jersey, Denver, Tampa, New York, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and San Diego initially. It will be rolling out to all riders in the United States over the next few months.

Docomo Shows 5G In Japan Ahead of 2020 Commercial Launch

At Inter Bee 2018 (Tokyo/Japan), Docomo has installed a 5G demo truck with a huge screen inside to demonstrate the power of 5G live streaming video.

The Truck is driving across Japan as part of Docomo’s 5G awareness campaign and has a live 5G base station at the top. The truck we went into didn’t use a live connection, perhaps because the trade show location doesn’t have 5G coverage yet. To reproduce the normal experience, Docomo used pre-recorded videos from previous sessions.

We’ve been assured that the video quality is the same, which seems consistent with other 5G video-streaming demos we’ve seen around the world.

Inside, The video setup consists of four Sony short-throw projectors for a completely immersive experience with the image covering three walls. At that size, it is evident that any pixelization is going to be much more noticeable than on a TV, which the whole point of the demo (see split screen below).

The recording of the 4K live stream from Taiwan to Tokyo looks impeccable and is a great demo for consumers. The Japan market is particularly attentive to image sharpness, and it’s not surprising that the country was first to adopt 1080p, 4K, and now 8K which has started to broadcast with NHK.

Technologically speaking, this kind of performance isn’t surprising from 5G. If anything, we should start seeing 8K video streaming demos very soon. Carriers worldwide are ramping up efforts to promote the technology ahead of their commercial launches. In the USA, 5G will launch in 2019, but in Japan, it will happen in 2020 because everything is tied to the upcoming Olympics.

Peak bandwidth is often the easiest 5G feature for consumers to understand, but in reality, 5G will dramatically increase the average speed and decrease the latency. Lower latency is probably one of the biggest contributors to “perceived performance” because each data request can be slowed down considerably by the connection time, and not the actual data-download duration.
