MacBook Pro with updated GPU is now available

Apple recently unveiled a bunch of new products during a press event in New York. But the company also quietly shared a press release with new configurations for the 15-inch MacBook Pro. Customers can now get a MacBook Pro with an AMD Radeon Pro Vega 16 or Vega 20 graphics processing unit.

Before this update, users could only get Radeon Pro 555X or 560X GPUs. Those options are still available, but you can now pay a bit more money to get much better GPUs.

As the name suggests, Vega is a new generation of graphics processors. The iMac Pro comes with desktop-class Vega processors — the Vega 56 and Vega 64. The Vega 16 or Vega 20 are less powerful than the iMac Pro GPUs. But they also fit in a laptop and consume much less power.

In particular, Radeon Pro GPUs use GDDR5 memory just like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One X. But Vega GPUs now take advantage of HBM2 memory, which provides more bandwidth and consumes less power.

It leads to a direct bump in performance. Apple says you can expect as much as 60 percent faster graphics performance. But we’ll have to wait for the benchmarks to know that for sure.

Vega GPUs are only available on the most expensive 15-inch MacBook Pro configuration that starts at $2,799 with a Radeon Pro 560X. Upgrading to the Vega 16 costs another $250, while the Vega 20 is $350 more expensive than the base model.

Now you can order a MacBook Pro with AMD’s Radeon Pro Vega GPU

Apple’s MacBook Pro has new graphics card options, with the AMD Radeon Pro Vega GPUs now being added to the notebook’s configurator. Promised earlier this month, alongside the big Mac mini and MacBook Air launch, the new graphics options are targeted at graphics professionals doing tasks like 3D rendering, as well as gamers. Specifically, it’s the AMD Radeon Pro Vega … Continue reading

Google's Incredible Night Sight Mode Was Worth the Wait

As good as the Pixel 3 is, when Google released the phone last month, it sort of felt incomplete. Verizon Conducts First 5G Data Transmission On A Smartphone

Verizon is one of the major carriers in the United States who will be switching on their commercial 5G networks next year. They’re now conducting tests to get everything prepared ahead of the commercial launch in 2019. Verizon has announced that it has now conducted the “world’s first” 5G data transmission to a smartphone on a “commercial 3GPP 5G New Radio (NR) network.”

Verizon conducted the test in partnership with Motorola, Samsung, and Qualcomm. The test was performed on a Moto Z3 smartphone that had a 5G moto mod. The module adds 5G compatibility to the Moto Z3 and it will be available for purchase next year once the network goes live for the public.

The carrier and its partners performed several tests over the 5G connection. They placed a video call and browsed the internet. The transmissions were completed over Big Red’s 28GHz spectrum and Samsung 5G New Radio solutions. The 5G capability offered by the mod is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X50 5G modem with QTM052 mmWave antenna modules.

Verizon’s 5G home service is currently available in a few cities across the United States. The company is aiming to launch its 5G mobile network commercially next year. Many manufacturers, including Samsung, will be launching 5G smartphones in 2019 which will be compatible with these networks.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite Teaser Reveals Some Game Details

Pokemon Go developer Niantic and publisher WB Games announced Harry Potter: Wizards Unite in November last year. The title will be similar to Pokemon Go in that it will also rely on augmented reality. A new teaser of this augmented reality-based game has been released online today. It shows us a glimpse of what the game might look like.

We don’t get to see any actual gameplay in this teaser but it provides hints of what players will be doing. The live-action trailer has a witch tracking down a rogue Golden Snitch, the little golden ball that’s actively sought in a game of Quidditch.

We also get to see a poster warning other witches and wizards that things from the magical world are crossing over into the Muggle world in what’s known as a Calamity. The Calamity will likely be the main mission for players who will visit the real-world locations to “cast spells, and encounter fantastic beasts and iconic characters along the way.”

Niantic and WB Games have yet to confirm when they’re going to release this mobile game. The teaser mentions that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be released in 2019. What we don’t know right now is precisely when this title will be released in the coming year.
