LEGO Wind Turbine Set Includes First Plant-based Plastic Parts

As much as we love or LEGO sets, these building blocks are made of plastics, which are byproducts of crude oil and natural gases. And while we’re not tossing LEGO bricks in the trash like drinking straws, making them still isn’t great for the environment. That said, LEGO wants to be more sustainable, and it is starting with this set called the LEGO 10268 Creator Expert Vestas Wind Turbine.

The set is based on Vestas’ wind turbine which is installed in over 80 countries. What makes this set unique is its use of plant-based plastic. The tiny trees in the set are made from all-new sustainably sourced plant-based plastic. The plastic used to make the spruce trees are made from sugarcane. The rest of the plastic elements of this set still uses plastics from conventional sources, but I guess LEGO needed to start small to see how this goes before ramping up.

The 826-piece set has a Vestas Wind Turbine that stands 3.3 feet tall, and comes with the ‘Plants from Plants’ spruce trees, along with a house with a working porch light. You also get three LEGO Vestas servicemen minifigures and a LEGO dog. This is one pretty cool and innovative LEGO set. I’d really like to own this one. You can order yours for $199.99 starting on November 23, 2018 in the LEGO Shop.

This Is Samsung’s Foldable Phone, Revealed At SDC

At the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) in San Francisco, we had our first glimpse of the Samsung foldable phone, which is going to be the first major folding phone whose technology is pretty much production-ready. This was widely anticipated since September

The phone’s exact shape was hidden into a boxy case, but Samsung has demonstrated that its folding technology was operational and ready for commercial debuts in real smartphones. Justin Denison, SVP of mobile product marketing, who unveiled the device said about the real design: “it is stunning.”

Samsung’s foldable phone actually has two displays (and not three as previously thought): one that functions when the phone is closed, and the foldable display that folds out to turn the device into a 7.3” tablet, just like we expected.

The external display, or cover display

The foldable screen is called Infinity Flex Display. Technically, the device seems like a final proof of concept, and it’s not clear when it will debut, although Justin Denison mentioned “the next [Samsung] Unpacked” event, which might happen around the MWC conference in late February, which is in-line with reports of a Q2 2019 launch, perhaps at a price of $1800 some say.

On-stage, Google endorsed the idea of foldable displays, and presenting the Android APIs available for these, it is only a matter of time (months, we think) before the first device appears. Foldable displays offer real opportunities in terms of user interface and productivity, and several use cases, including running one app per screen, have been integrated into the Android code, already.

Interestingly, Samsung pointed out that folding displays are not the only option they are working on, and rollable or even stretchable ones are viable possibilities that seem to have been successfully explored.

Incredibly, the foldable screen appears perfectly flat and seamless, and Samsung says that it has to overcome a great many hurdles to make it work in the real world, with hundreds of thousands of fold/unfold cycles.

With this kind of technology, the size of the display is no longer tied to the size of the (folded) device. It’s been a long time coming, and Samsung’s efforts for the past decade have paid off. It’s not clear when competitors will follow suit, but this will be the beginning of a new era for industrial design and mobile productivity. You can watch the whole stream with the link below:

iPhone XR Production Cuts Could Have Been Due To Quality Issues

The iPhone XR was initially touted to be the iPhone of 2018 that would sell well, and initial reports even claimed that it outpaced the iPhone 8 in terms of pre-orders. However a recent report revealed that Apple had cancelled production boosts for the handset, leading to speculation that maybe the iPhone XR isn’t selling as well as everyone had thought.

Whether or not that speculation may be true remains to be seen, but according to a report from Apple 3.0, it cites Rosenblatt analyst Jun Zhang as suggesting that the production cuts could be due to quality issues with the PCBs, which is why Apple might have cancelled the production boosts while they sort it out.

According to Zhang, “We believe some Printed Circuit Board (PCB) supplier shipments of HDI boards were quickly dropped this week. This may be attributable to quality issues from Skyworks PAs. We believe this potential round of iPhone XR production cuts by Apple may be attributable to the recently found PA quality issues.”

However we should note that we haven’t really heard any complaints about major issues plaguing the iPhone XR yet given that PCBs are a big deal in our electronics. It is possible that maybe there is no issue and that the PCBs simply weren’t up to Apple’s standards, but either way since Apple will no longer announce how many units they sell, we suppose we’ll never really know for sure how well (or how badly) the iPhone XR has done for itself.

Thunder Purple OnePlus 6T Won’t Be Released In The U.S.

OnePlus recently launched a new color option for its latest smartphone, the OnePlus 6T. The striking color option is called Thunder Purple. It’s only available in the company’s home market of China right now. It was believed that perhaps OnePlus may offer this color option in other markets later but that may not be the case.

The 8GB/128GB variant of the OnePlus 6T is only available in China for about $520. OnePlus didn’t say when it was announced if it would be selling the device in this colorway in any other markets across the globe.

There has certainly been a lot of interest from customers in this color option. Why wouldn’t there be, it does look really good. However, there’s bad news for those who have been holding out for this option as the company has confirmed that the Thunder Purple OnePlus 6T will remain exclusive to China.

The company’s fans would certainly be hoping that it reconsiders this decision. It would net the company more sales if it decided to release this color option in other markets across the globe such as the United States. Whether or not the company decides to do that at some point down the road remains to be seen.
