Last year, Defakto released the limited edition Stille Nacht (Silent Night) in collaboration with artist Friederike Bellman. The watch featured a hand-painted star field throughout the dial. Now, the independent German watchmaker is back with the successor to the original: the Mitternacht (or in English, the Midnight). It’s even better than the original.
Like the original, each timepiece features a star field airbrushed by hand, making each watch unique. But this time, the dial is even darker, allowing the stars, painted in Superluminova, to shine even brighter. The new version’s hands are now also coated in lume to make it easier to read in the dark of midnight.
The watch features a 40mm face, a sapphire crystal and a Swiss-made Ronda 712 Quartz movement. It retails for around $400 US after conversion from EUR, without import duties.
As detailed in John’s excellent piece on the modern state of timepieces, traditional watches have survived the smartwatch onslaught and some brands are seeing sales increase. Defakto is among the growing number of independent watch makers emerging without the massive might behind the biggest names in watches. While technology has paved the way for a smartwatch, it has also allowed independent companies to access parts and services traditionally guarded by legacy watchmakers.
The new 2019 A-Class sedan is a gateway car, and Mercedes-Benz aren’t being coy about it. They’ve designed it to draw in a new, younger generation of buyers and get them hooked on the brand, filling the sedan with enticing new tech you’d normally have to pay through the nose for. “It is significant in that it’s the first car … Continue reading

Motorola One is the company’s Android One smartphone. This handset was released in markets across the globe several months ago. The company has now announced that it’s bringing the Android One device to the United States. It will be available for purchase in the country exclusively from Best Buy.
The Motorola One has a 5.9 inch notched display with 720×1520 pixel resolution. Despite the notched display, it has enough of a chin for the company to put its logo on there. There’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor under the hood with 4GB RAM, 64GB of storage, and a 3,000mAh battery. The device also features a 13 megapixel rear and 8 megapixel front camera.
This is an Android One device. What that means is that it will receive updates swiftly. It also guarantees a vanilla Android experience on the device. The device ships with Android 8.1 Oreo and Motorola has confirmed that it will receive the Android 9 Pie update in due course. It will eventually get the Android Q update as well when it arrives.
Interested customers can order the device online from November 9th exclusively via Best Buy. It will be available in stores from November 11th for $399. The unit being sold in the United States is GSM unlocked so it will not work on Verizon or Sprint.
