This 3D-Printed Ghost Rider Costume Is Smokin’

Mike Warren wanted to dress up as Ghost Rider for Halloween this year. Now, he could have just worn a cheap mask and leather jacket, but he wanted to go the extra mile with a wearable glowing skull helmet surrounded in a cloud of smoke. When you are Ghost Rider, that’s just how it has to be. You can’t cheap out.

Mike used a very modern tool for generating the smoke: a simple vape.  Plus, the glowing LEDs inside the skull do a really great job of creating the look of fire, without the risk of burning yourself himself beyond all recognition.

Combined with the smoke really creates the illusion that this is the real Ghost Rider. The smoke comes from a store-bought electronic cigarette. Warren modded it with custom controls, a fan unit, and some flexible tubes to redirect the vapor flow.

Warren documented the entire build on Instructables if you want to try making one yourself. That link has links to all of the parts and components he used, and the 3D skull model he modified and 3D printed.

This is one awesome Ghost Rider costume. Now all he needs is a flaming motorcycle to ride. Maybe he’ll make that next year.

Sonos Google Assistant Support Delayed Until 2019

Sonos announced last year that it would bring Google Assistant support to the Sonos One in 2018. It said that Assistant on the Sonos One would work the same as it does on any other device. The announcement was made after it added support for Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant. Sonos today confirmed that it’s delaying Assistant support until next year.

The company said today that it planned to have Assistant ready to ship in 2018. However, it says that “we need a bit more time to get the experience right.” Sonos now promises to lock down a date in 2019 and adds that it’s making good progress in that regard.

Those who are interested in helping the company with this can now sign up to be considered for the private beta. Beta testers will be required to commit to at least 14 hours of listening per week, use 10 voice commands daily, and respond to surveys within 72 hours.

It says that the process to screen applicants for the private beta will take a few weeks. Once that’s done, it will test the experience in a few hundred homes first before rolling it out to a few thousand homes in the coming months. It aims to get important feedback from listeners in the real world before launching this to the public.

iOS 12.1 Lockscreen Bug Gives Access To Contacts

Apple released iOS 12.1 for supported devices a couple of days back. Security researchers have already discovered a lockscreen bug which can allow someone to gain access to the device’s contacts even when they’re not authorized to unlock the device. This isn’t the first time that a lockscreen bug has been discovered in an iOS iteration.

The iOS 12.1 lockscreen exploit that has been discovered can provide information to all contact information on the device. Someone who wants to leverage this exploit will have to activate a FaceTime call and use the new group FaceTime feature to access contact information without having to unlock the device.

As expected, this exploit only works on iPhones that are running iOS 12.1. It’s not present on older iterations of the operating system. It can only be leveraged when someone has physical access to the device and can’t be used remotely.

The video above shows how this exploit can be used to access contact information on the device without entering a passcode. Apple has previously been quick to patch these bugs so it may only be a matter of time before the company releases a fix for this as well. The company is yet to acknowledge it, though.
