BMW Will Launch Ride-Hailing Service In China Next Month

BMW has become the first global car manufacturer to obtain a license which will allow it to launch a ride-hailing service in China. The company is reportedly planning to launch the service in the People’s Republic next month. It has obtained the ride-hailing license in Chengdu which is the capital of the Sichuan province in Southwest China. The license has been obtained by BMW Mobility Service which is a fully owned subsidiary of the BMW Group.

BMW Group has already announced earlier this year that it’s increasing its stake in the Chinese joint venture with partner Brilliance China Automotive to 75 percent from 50 percent. Foreign firms are required to partner with local companies on such projects.

China has a substantial ride-hailing market which is worth an estimated $23 billion. That’s more than all other ride-hailing markets combined. Local giant Didi Chuxing dominates the market as it accounts for 90 percent of all bookings.

The specifics about BMW’s ride-hailing service will likely be released a bit closer to its launch. It’s said to go live in the country next month. BMW isn’t the only German auto giant that’s interested in the Chinese’s ride-hailing market. Daimler has also expressed an interest in launching a service in partnership with the Geely Group.

PlayStation 4 Outsold The Xbox One And Switch Last Month

Sony’s PlayStation has had a great run ever since it was first launched back in 2013. The console still continues to outsell its competition and this was the case in the month of October 2018 as well. The latest data from NPD Group shows that the PlayStation 4 outsold the Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch in terms of dollar and units sold last month.

The overall spending on gaming hardware was up 26 percent in October 2018 compared to last year. The industry firm noted significant gains in spending on both PS4 and Xbox One. Hardware spending has surged 19 percent so far this year with the PS4, Xbox One, and devices like the NES Classic Edition and SNES Classic Edition being the solid growth drivers.

The PlayStation 4 is maintaining its impressive momentum of year-over-year growth, according to NPD analyst Mat Piscatella. The hardware unit sales for the PS4 reached an all-time October higher for the platform. “While PlayStation 4 hardware dollar sales reached its highest point for an October month since October 2014,” Piscatella added.

The data also shows that this was actually one of the best Octobers that the PS4 has ever had. The unit sales of the console in October 2018 have reached the highest mark for any PlayStation console in an October month since the PlayStation 2 back in October 2002.
