These Star Trek Spock Socks Have Vulcan Ears
Posted in: UncategorizedThese Star Trek Spock Socks are completely logical. Allow me to channel my inner Dr. Seuss. Spock socks shock. They also rock. Whether on the outer rim or in dry dock. Be one of the flock and dress in Spock. It’s the fashion around the clock. Do you grok?
Okay, I make a terrible Dr. Seuss. Because I ran out of juice. My rhymes like a noose. Anyway, enough of that nonsense. I see you raising a Vulcan eyebrow.
So these Spock Socks have ears sticking out of their sides, which may not be very practical if you wear pants or boots since they’ll get in the way, but if you wear these with some Starfleet shorts and a uniform top you’ll be alright. I’m sure you won’t get any weird looks at all.
These bad boys are the logical way to keep your feet warm. They’re made of 80% Acrylic/17% Nylon/3% Spandex and 100% awesome. I feel like they are bound to follow this up with Romulan and a Ferengi versions. I can’t wait to wear Quark on my feet with his big Dumbo ears. I’d pay good Latinum for that.
As a kid, I loved the original Battlestar Galactica, and had some of the toys that went with the show. I particularly remember the Viper spaceship, and I would routinely play with the triangular fighter during commercial breaks. If you feel more nostalgic about the 21st century Battlestar, check out this collectible toy.
This is Apollo’s Viper MK II the newer BSG. Toymaker Eaglemoss says that it worked closely with members of the modern Galactica visual effects team to ensure the model was as accurate as possible. The 10.6″ long model also comes with Collector Magazine #6 that details the ships in the series.
The Viper Mk II will set you back $59.99 and can be pre-ordered now for delivery in March 2019. I miss this show and need to find it to stream.
There’s something about art made with rudimentary low-polygon count forms that I find very appealing. I think it’s because it harkens back to early 1990s video games like Virtua Fighter and the original Tomb Raider. If you like the style as much as I do, then check out this awesome collection of papercraft art from Oxygami.
These 3D sculptures include forms like deer or unicorn heads you can hang on your wall like prize trophies, but I think the cat ones are the coolest, since they offer fully-formed animals. They’re all pretty awesome though, and best of all, each one is available as a PDF template, so you can print them out yourself and make your own.
The designs are available from Oxygami’s Etsy shop, starting at about $9 (USD) each. You’ll just need an X-Acto knife, a ruler, glue, patience, and a steady hand to build your own low-poly menagerie.
While the thought of a machine that can squirt out endless ropes of molten glass is a bit frightening, the folks at MIT have just about perfected the process. In a paper published in 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing, researchers Chikara Inamura, Michael Stern, Daniel Lizardo, Peter Houk, and Neri Oxman describe a system for 3D printing glass that offers far more control over the hot material and the final product.
Their system, called G3DP2, “is a new AM platform for molten glass that combines digitally integrated three-zone thermal control system with four-axis motion control system, introducing industrial-scale production capabilities with enhanced production rate and reliability while ensuring product accuracy and repeatability, all previously unattainable for glass.”
The system uses a closed, heated box that holds the melted glass and another thermally controlled box where it prints the object. A moveable plate drops the object lower and lower as it is being printed and the print head moves above it. The system is interesting because it actually produces clear glass structures that can be used for decoration or building. The researchers take special care to control the glass extrusion system to ensure that it cools down and crystallizes without injecting impurities or structural problems.
“In the future, combining the advantages of this AM technology with the multitude of unique material properties of glass such as transparency, strength, and chemical stability, we may start to see new archetypes of multifunctional building blocks,” wrote the creators.
Console makers have a love-hate relationship with emulators. On the one hand, they hate the piracy it empowers. But on the other hand, some of them have actually used them to power their own mini retro consoles. While Microsoft has no such “Xbox Classic” (yet), its very own Xbox One might have just become the next big emulation darling. Simply … Continue reading
A Bootleg of One of the Year's Best Horror Films Just Mysteriously Appeared on Amazon Prime [Update — It Has Now Disappeared]
Posted in: Today's ChiliYou might have noticed the Japanese zombie horror film, One Cut of the Dead, is currently available for free on Amazon Prime both here in the United States and in the United Kingdom. It’s not supposed to be.
It is inevitable that as our bodies begin to age, we end up with more and more ailments, not to mention parts of our bodies begin to function in a less efficient manner than ever before. Many of the elderly have learned to cope with various conditions, and having a blood pressure monitor machine at home is always handy. Omron Healthcare has come up with its all-new HeartGuide, which is touted to be the first wearable blood pressure monitor from the company. Made available for pre-orders already, this oscillometric blood pressure monitor would arrive in the design of a wrist watch and has picked up clearance from the FDA as a personal medical device.
Being a medical-grade blood pressure device that looks very much like a regular wrist watch, this particular piece of wearable technology enables the wearer to keep track of their blood pressure anytime, anywhere, all the while looking stylish wearing it. Of course, it makes perfect sense to have the HeartGuide double up as a digital wrist watch since you would be wearing it like one. The oscillometric measurement that is featured has been incorporated in an innovative design, where the cuff in the watch band will inflate to measure clinically accurate systolic and diastolic pressure.
This particular oscillometric method is the FDA-recognized standard for accurate, automated, medical-grade personal blood pressure measurement, and over 80 new patents have been filed during the pioneering of new components for the HeartGuide. Apart from keeping track of your blood pressure measurements, the HeartGuide is also well within its capability of tracking one’s daily activity including the number of steps taken, distance walked and calories burned, in addition to the quality of sleep.
Keeping the time is further enhanced via basic smartwatch functionality such as time, date, notifications of texts, emails and calls, as well as the ability to set event reminders. Expect the HeartGuide to retail for $499 apiece with availability being set on January 8, 2019.

No one likes spam messages, especially on their phones because notifications can be distracting, especially if they’re not from anyone important, like spam. However according to a report from Android Police, it seems that they have been tipped off that spam protection for Google’s Messages is starting to roll out for some users.
At the moment it doesn’t seem like it is a particularly wide roll out as some users are claiming that they have yet to receive it. It also appears to be a server-side enabled feature, which means that you don’t really need to do anything on your end to get it, although we imagine that you might need to have the latest version of Messages.
Now according to Android Police, it seems that there could be some privacy concerns regarding this feature. This is because according to Google’s support page, it seems that some info about your messages will be sent to Google first. “To help identify spammers, Google temporarily stores the phone numbers of people sending and receiving messages with you and the times they messaged with you.”
However Google stresses that your phone number or the content of the messages will not be stored, so there’s that. That being said, spam protection is a feature that can be turned on or off anytime you want, so if you’d rather Google not have any access to your messages, spam or no spam, then you might want to consider turning it off or perhaps find a different app.
