Microsoft Confirms Possible HoloLens 2 Press Event At MWC 2019

Microsoft has been working on the second generation of its HoloLens headset and it appears that the company is ready to make some details public. It has sent invites to the press for an event at the Mobile World Congress 2019 next month where it may talk about the headset.

The second-generation of its HoloLens headset is said to feature an improved field of view aside from being a lot lighter and thus more comfortable to view. Microsoft’s latest Kinect sensor will also be present onboard in addition to a custom AI chip for better performance.

The event is going to take place on Sunday, February 24th at 5 PM CET. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella will be opening the proceedings and he will be joined by Technical Fellow Alex Kipman. Kipman’s name on the invite stands out as he has been closely associated with the HoloLens 2 project. This gives a big hint that the event could be about the HoloLens 2.

It’s interesting to note that Microsoft has chosen to conduct this event at the Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona next month. It has essentially shunned the event in recent years after Windows Phone met its demise. It did conduct annual press events for Windows Phone and Windows Mobile back when they were still a thing at MWC.

CERN Looking To Build Collider Four Times Bigger Than Its LHC

CERN’s Large Hadron Collider is quite big, as the name suggests, at 17 miles long. It asked for recommendations from 1,300 contributors back in 2014 for a feasible plan to build a new collider that would be significantly bigger than the LHC. CERN has now unveiled the preliminary designs for this project called the Future Circular Collider which will make the LHC tiny in comparison.

According to the plan, this massive particle accelerator is going to be 62 miles long and up to six times more powerful than the Large Hadron Collider. The head of CERN’s theory department Gian Francesco Giudice put the leap in perspective by describing it as planning a trip not to Mars, but to Uranus.”

Researchers would obviously be hoping that the significantly more powerful FCC is able to discover new particles due to its more powerful collisions. On the other hand, the LHC hasn’t discovered any new particles other than the Higgs Boson.

As you can probably imagine, this project isn’t going to come cheap. It’s expected to cost around $24 billion and there’s no guarantee either that just because it’s powerful it will end up discovering a new particle.

CERN will be using the LHC for a few more decades before some like the FCC will be brought into operation so it’s going to be a long time before we hear about any discoveries, or lack thereof, from a project of this magnitude.

DJI drones can fly over crowds if they wear this certified parachute

Most of the time, commercial and personal drones are not allowed to fly over groups of people. For safety, obviously. Indemnis’ drone parachute changes that. The company’s product was just certified to allow operators to legally fly drones over small groups of people. This is the first time such a device received the certification.

Indemnis Parachute for DJI Drones straps onto DJI’s large drones and features a launcher that deploys a parachute when sensors detect flight anomalies.

To become certified, the Alaska-based company’s product had to pass a series of obstacles that included 45 functionality tests across five different failure scenarios. The tests were designed to ensure the parachute deploys at the right time, every time.

According to a press release, the product works like this:

“Nexus is a ballistic parachute launcher, triggered automatically if the drone suddenly begins tilting abnormally or falling. It deploys the parachute within 30 milliseconds at 90 mph, through a tube that rapidly inflates to keep the parachute lines away from the drone body and propellers. Indemnis offers the Nexus package today for the Inspire 2, and intends to offer it for Matrice 200 series and Matrice 600 series drones by late 2019.”

A handful of companies are attempting to address drone safety, and parachutes are one solution. Often, the products are designed to protect bystanders and the drone itself. DJI has yet to build a parachute into one of its products, though.
