This Atari 2600 Handheld Brings The Woodgrain

Woodgrain. There was a time when all of our coolest gadgets (and station wagons) were covered in this fake veneer. I for one, think it looks awesome and wish everything from our phones to our computers was still covered in the stuff. Sadly, no gadget maker seems to appreciate this look today, but the creator of this handheld RetroPie Atari 2600 console does.

This is what Atari’s Game Boy would have looked like had they released such a thing.

Modder Christian (“TheF00”) Doran’s  handheld looks appropriately retro in black and woodgrain. Inside, it packs a Pi Zero micro computer running RetroPie so it can play lots of emulated games. I’m not gonna lie; I just love the classic design of this thing. It’s simple and elegant. The body is black plastic, with red buttons and a D-pad for controls. The vinyl woodgrain applique around the screen completes the aesthetic. It makes me feel all warm and nostalgic. I may need to play some old games today like Space Invaders or Asteroids.

If you want to print your own so you can have one, you can find the files for the 3D-printed case on Thingiverse, and the creator of this handheld has also provided a basic guide to sourcing the other parts. It’s all easy to find stuff that’s available on eBay and other places online.

3D-printed gun activist Cody Wilson indicted for sexual assault

The State of Texas has indicted Cody Wilson, a 3D-printed gun rights activist who fought to allow makers to post and print guns, of sexual assault after he had sex with a 17-year-old girl. The affidavit noted that he met the girl on a website for finding “sugar daddies.” The indictment, posted on Ars, notes that he faces “four counts of sexual assault of a child, two charges of indecency with a child by contact, and two charges of indecency with a child by exposure.”

The charges are punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

The affidavit on the crime said Wilson used the name Sanjuro on the site and that he paid the 17-year-old $500 for sex. His company, DefenseDistributed, has dumped him as founder.

Wilson is out on $150,000 bond and not yet in jail.

He rose to prominence for supporting 3D-printed guns as far back as 2013, causing a panic that reduced interest in the 3D printing industry and led to a court decision in July that found 3D printed gun plans to be legal.

Medical crowdfunding has become a billion-dollar industry practically overnight, led by sites like GoFundMe. Fonebud W travel Wi-Fi device

If you tend to travel a whole lot out of your country, one of the most important things that you would like to find out would be whether your mobile service provider has some sort of roaming data plan so that you can continue with your social media updates, video streaming and checking out the Internet wherever you are. I believe that most of us would probably settle for a local SIM card, as many of these companies tend to offer fantastic privileges with a tourist SIM pack. Fonebud IoT Berhad has something different in mind with the Fonebud W travel Wi-Fi device.

The Fonebud W will place an emphasis on travelers from the US as well as Europe to gain unrestricted WiFi access in more than 90 countries. Those who are headed out to China no longer need to purchase a VPN (Virtual Private Network) app earlier in advance in order to gain unrestricted access to the likes of Google, Facebook, and Youtube, not to mention sending Whatsapp messages to their family and friends. Talk about being hugely practical!

Those who are interested in the Fonebud W might want to make a beeline to CES 2019 as it will make an appearance there. Touted to be the ideal device for the business traveler, the Fonebud W promises to deliver up to 35 active hours of unlimited 4G/3G Wi-Fi data roaming whenever you are abroad. It is also capable of hooking up to eight devices at a time, making this ideal for families who travel together. The hotspot device also doubles up as a wireless or USB charging station, letting you use it with compatible devices as well as legacy ones that are still tethered via cords. The 10,000mAh battery ensures that it keeps on going without missing a beat.

The Fonebud W will rely on eSIM technology, doing away with the need to tote around a SIM card in order to remain connected to the Internet when you are overseas. There is no monthly plan to worry about, with data plans being available from 90 days to 365 days.

The Essential Phone Has Been Officially Discontinued

Many were understandably hyped up about the Essential Phone. After all it is a phone made by a company founded by one of Android’s creators, so who better to create an Android phone than one of its original creators, right? Unfortunately the device did leave much to be desired and apparently cancelled the development of its second phone.

Unfortunately for those who are still hoping to get their hands on the Essential Phone, you’d be out of luck because the handset is no longer available for purchase via Essential’s website. According to the company who emailed a statement to 9to5Google, they have confirmed that the handset has been effectively discontinued.

According to the statement, it reads, “We are sold out of Essential Phone on essential.com and won’t be adding any new inventory. We are now hard at work on our next mobile product and will continue to sell accessories and provide speedy software updates and customer support to our existing community.”

Note that the discontinuation should not be confused with the company shutting down, which is something that looked like it was happening following a 30% cut of its staff. If the statement is accurate, it sounds like Essential might have a new device in the works that we will hopefully learn more about come 2019.
