Los Angeles Metro System May Support Apple Pay This Fall

Folks in Los Angeles may be able to make fare payments using Apple Pay before the end of this year. A new report claims that the rail and bus transit system of the city should allow riders to pay fares using Apple Pay this fall.

MacRumors reports that Los Angeles Metro is working with Apple to bring support for Apple Pay. This transit agency manages the integration of the TAP card system in the Los Angeles Area. Support for Apple Pay is reportedly scheduled to roll out this fall. The scribe mentions that it obtained this information through a public information request filed under California law.

Support for Apple Pay is part of a major update to the TAP system that’s currently underway. The update includes fare boxes across the transit system which get real-time data about fares purchased by the public online. There will also be a new TAP mobile app and Wallet which should debut in late summer. The system will eventually support Android phones with NFC as well for mobile payments.

Once Apple Pay support goes live, commuters will be able to pay their fares simply be holding a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch near a TAP card reader. The process will be similar to how Apple Pay is used for in-store purchases. LA would thus join the list of a handful of other cities where Apple’s mobile payments service can be used to pay public transportation fares.

Fortnite Player Recreates The Millennium Falcon

Creative mode is a pretty awesome addition to Fortnite. It allows players to do some neat things without having to worry about your being shot down by a player or the storm forcing you to move. And with a player base as huge as Fortnite’s is there are many creative players, which means more cool stuff is being built daily. I love it.

One of the best creations is this Millennium Falcon. YouTuber MakaMakes put together this impressive recreation of Han Solo’s ship, but it’s not just a nicely-detailed model on the outside, it also recreates the inside of the famous ship. Han Solo would be proud. Check it out in all its glory in the video below:

I’ve never created anything like this in the game myself, but I imagine this took a good bit of time and effort. Maybe players can create other Star Wars landmarks and turn Fortnite into a giant Star Wars playground. That would be awesome, although I imagine that the game developer may have a problem with that at some point. But it would still be very cool to see it happen.

Huawei Honor’s smartphone with a hole-punch display is real

Honor officially launched the Honor View 20 today in Paris. Honor is Huawei’s sub-brand for mid-range phones. And the View 20 doesn’t look like your average smartphone — the company traded the notch for a hole-punch display.

Honor thinks this design isn’t as intrusive as a centered notch. And rumor has it that Samsung could also put a hole-punch display into the Samsung Galaxy S10.

I played with the Honor View 20 for a bit of time, and it definitely feels different from an iPhone X-style notch. Let’s start with the little details that annoy me. The 4.5mm cutout for the selfie camera isn’t exactly in the corner of the device and it looks a bit weird with a standard Android menu. Somehow, I want the cutout to be vertically centered — it’s not.

And yet, when you look at photos and videos, it looks great. After a few minutes, you barely notice it. It feels like yet another icon in the notification area while the rest is just s-c-r-e-e-n. I hope more companies are going to follow this trend.

The device features a gigantic 6.4-inch LCD display with rounded corners — I’ve been using OLED displays for a couple of years, and it’s hard to look at LCD displays again. It’s nearly as big as an iPhone XS Max. While you can’t find a bezel at the top of the device, the View 20 still has a chin — a small bezel at the bottom of the device.

Unlike Huawei’s P20 Pro, the company has moved the fingerprint sensor to the back of the device. It has two cameras on the back — a 48 megapixel Sony IMX596 sensor as well as a second, cheap sensor to detect objects in 3D and add background blur using software features.

Huawei/Honor has updated its system-on-a-chip. The company has been working on its own chips instead of working with Qualcomm or Samsung. The result is a new Kirin 980 system-on-a-chip. Like Apple’s A12 Bionic, the company now uses a 7nm manufacturing process. The phone has a 4,000 mAh battery.

It comes in four colors — Midnight Black, Sapphire Blue, Phantom Red and Phantom Blue. As you can see in the photos, the company is still setting its phones apart from the competition thanks to colorful backs with mesmerizing reflections. This time, the Honor View 20 has a V-shaped pattern on the back. Unfortunately, it attracts fingerprints like crazy.

The Honor View 20 is going to be available starting tomorrow for €569/£499 for 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, or €649/£579 for 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. As usual, Huawei/Honor focuses on Asia and Europe.

But the best part about this new phone is that you get an exclusive character skin for Fortnite when you buy it. What else do you need from a phone?

New Google Hardware In The Works Codenamed ‘Salmon’ And ‘Medaka’

Google has some new devices in the works which judging from a report from last year, are codenamed “Bonito” and “Sargo”. These are rumored to be possible Pixel devices as Google usually uses codenames based around fish for their Pixel handsets. Now it seems that there could be more devices that Google could be working on.

According to a report from Till Kottmann (via Android Police), it seems that Google has at least more devices that they are working on and they are codenamed “Salmon” and “Medaka”. Like we said, Google usually gives fish codenames to its Pixel devices, which hints that these are also Pixel-related products. Just in case you didn’t know, apparently medaka is the informal name for a Japanese rice fish.

It is unclear as to which Pixel devices these codenames could be referring to, but it has been speculated that at least one of them could be the rumored Pixel Watch. The device has been rumored about for quite a while now but has yet to make an appearance. It was speculated to launch last year but it was a no show, suggesting that it might be launched this year instead.

Google will be hosting its Google I/O event towards the middle of the year and sometimes new products do get announced, so hopefully we’ll have more details then and won’t need to wait until the Pixel event at the end of the year to find out more.
