Yamaha's Sonogenic keytar is equal parts instrument and party trick

Keytars, almost by definition, are charmingly goofy. How could they not be? They’re wearable pianos that lend themselves well to pageantry. Racks of meticulously prepped synths come with a sort of gravitas that doesn’t exist when keys are slung acros…

Sony α6400 mirrorless camera

When it comes to mirrorless cameras, there are many different kinds of models to choose from with various manufacturers touting their wares. Sony too, has its fair share of champions with the Sony α6400 mirrorless camera being one of the latest additions to the family that will bring with it a slew of Sony’s most advanced technologies in the body of a compact, lightweight APS-C camera.

Make no mistake about it, the Sony α6400 will be a speedy little one, where it lays claim to having the world’s fastest autofocus (AF) acquisition of 0.02 seconds. In addition, it also has a new advanced Real-time Eye AF and real-time tracking capabilities. To impress the masses further, the Sony α6400 comes with high-speed shooting at up to 11 fps with AF/AE tracking, a new-generation BIONZ X image processing engine which will be able to produce excellent image quality, 4K video recording, and a fully 180-degree tiltable LCD touch screen among others.

It also boasts of 425 phase-detection AF points and 425 contrast-detection AF points which have been strategically placed over the entire image area, where it will cover approximately 84 percent of the image area. Spicing things up would be the Real-time Eye AF, which will make use of artificial intelligence based object recognition in order to detect and process eye data in real time. This results in vastly improved accuracy, speed and tracking performance of Eye AF. When you are in the autofocus mode, the camera is able to automatically detect the eyes of the subject, where it can even choose to concentrate on the preferred eye (left or right) of the subject as the focus point.

Keeping the Sony α6400 company would be a slew of image processing algorithms from Sony’s newest full-frame cameras, which further suppresses noise while preserving resolution and improving texture depiction. Expect the Sony α6400 to ship in February 2019 for a recommended retail price of $900 apiece.

FTC Being Pushed To Break Up Facebook

Facebook has gone through a tough time following the Cambridge Analytica data scandal but it doesn’t seem to be out of the woods just yet. Some major advocacy groups are calling on the Federal Trade Commission to take stringent measures against the world’s largest social network, including breaking it up as punishment for abuse of its market position.

Advocacy groups like the Open Market Institute, Color of Change, and the Electronics Privacy Information Center have called on the FTC today to make a major intervention into the way Facebook operators. They’re calling for a multi-billion dollar fine, an overhaul of Facebook’s hiring practices, and even breaking up the company.

Groups like the Open Market Institute and Color of Change are of the view that Facebook should be fined up to $2 billion and that it should be made to divest its ownership of WhatsApp and Instagram owing to its failure to protect user data on those platforms as well.

“Penalties and remedies that go far beyond the Commission’s recent actions are called for,” the groups argue, but it’s unclear if the FTC will do what they’re asking for. Moreover, the FTC is shut down currently, as many of its employees have been furloughed due to the government shutdown. Facebook has not commented on the matter yet.

The LEGO Speak & Spell Replica: L… E… G… O…

Growing up in the 1970s, one of my earliest memories of an electronic toy had to be the Speak & Spell. This tablet-sized device helped many of us improve our spelling and vocabulary, playing word games using an early speech synthesizer. I remember there being a myth that the voice used in the sound chip Texas Instruments used samples of Dan Rather’s voice, though if that were true, he must have been abducted by robots.

The Speak & Spell would later end up being circuit bent, and used by musicians ranging from Beck to Kraftwerk to Limp Bizkit. You can still pick up an old Speak & Spell on eBay, but if you’ve got the LEGO bricks sitting around, you could just build one of these instead.

This awesome LEGO Speak & Spell was created by Jtheels, and is a perfect, albeit slightly large replica of the classic electronic toy. Be sure to poke around on Jtheels’ Flickr page, where he’s also got a LEGO Connect Four, a LEGO Mattel Football game, a LEGO Simon, a LEGO Merlin, and a working LEGO TossAcross among his various creations.

Samsung Galaxy S10+ leak shows headphone jack, dual hole-punch camera

The Samsung Galaxy S10 is slowly being revealed through unofficial means. Several leaks have revealed key details and the latest report is the most detailed yet. According to All About Samsung, the upcoming Samsung flagship will have tiny bezels, front-facing cameras that poke through the display, a USB-C port and a headphone jack.

This report meshes with past leaks. There could be three variations of the phone: the S10, S10+ and a new version called the S10E. It’s been reported that Samsung will position the S10 as the main model with the S10+ being the large screen model (and the only with dual-front facing cameras). The S10E will likely be a less expensive version and could even have an LCD screen instead of an OLED screen.

Most of phone’s details have leaked out but a few questions remain. Will the phone have a fingerprint reader embedded into the screen? Will the phones have improved facial recognition to compete more directly with Apple’s Face ID? And lastly, will Samsung jack the prices in line with the latest iPhone prices?

Samsung plans to unveil the Galaxy S10 at an event in San Francisco on February 20. We’ll have a team on the ground to tell you more about the device.

Luna Display updates its video engine for faster performance

Astro, the company behind Luna Display and Astropad, is releasing a major software update that will drastically improve performance. According to the company’s own testing, you should expect as much as a 100 percent performance increase when it comes to latency and refresh rate.

Luna Display lets you use your iPad as a second monitor for your laptop. For instance, if you’re traveling and you can’t get any work done without an external display, you can use Luna Display to move macOS windows across your laptop display and your iPad.

Some people have also been using it with a home server. For instance, you can use Luna Display to control a Mac Mini using an iPad, a wireless keyboard and a wireless mouse. You’re no longer tied to a desk.

Compared to similar apps, Luna Display relies on a hardware dongle. This tiny USB-C or Mini DisplayPort device emulates a display. In your Mac settings, it looks like you plugged a standard display even though it’s just a tiny key.

Astropad is a separate app for creative professionals. It lets you mirror your Mac display and use Photoshop with your Apple Pencil. They both rely on the same rendering engine.

And today’s update is all about performance. Thanks to a bunch of optimizations, you get an average latency of 11.3 ms when you use one of those apps with a 13-inch MacBook Pro, an 11-inch iPad Pro and a USB cable. Over Wi-Fi, you get a latency of 22.4 ms.

When it comes to frame rate, it’s a bit harder to quantify. But Astro has compared its products with competing solutions and thinks you have a higher chance of hitting 60 frames per second using Astro’s products.

Astro has compared Luna Display with Duet Display and Air Display. And it’s interesting to see that the company reports better performance than Duet.

Duet recently released and update to take advantage of hardware acceleration. At the time, Duet claimed that its solution was faster and cheaper than Luna Display. It’s clear that this space is moving quickly, and the result is better apps for everyone.

NASA: Astronaut immune system cells affected by long-term trips

NK-cell function appears to be impaired during spaceflights over long durations according to a new study published this week. This means that immune systems could be broken down somewhat during the long trips NASA hopes to take with astronauts in the distant future. The research here was done by a team of researchers at the University of Arizona, the University … Continue reading
