Samsung Galaxy Fold Foldable Smartphone Officially Launched

Last year at SDC 2018, Samsung sort of took the wraps off their foldable smartphone. In reality, it was more of a sneak peek where the company showcased its foldable screen technology. However, during Samsung’s Galaxy S10 Unpacked event, the company has since officially announced the handset in full in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

It’s not the most creative name we’ve heard but it does a good job of getting the point across. The handset will feature a 7.3-inch Infinity Flex display that will allow users to transform the phone into a tablet-like device, and back again. When the device is folded, the cover display will sport a 4.6-inch HD+ Super AMOLED screen which makes it smaller than the majority of smartphones out there today, even budget ones.

That being said, we can understand why Samsung has opted for a smaller screen as using a larger display could potentially hike up the cost of the phone. Other specs include an octa-core processor built using the 7nm process, 12GB of RAM, a triple camera setup on the back, a dual front-facing camera (when unfolded), and the cover camera is a 10Mp shooter.

The phone will also come with a 4,380mAh battery, although we have to wonder given how many displays the phone is powering if it will be enough. As for pricing and availability, the Samsung Galaxy Fold will be launched in the US on AT&T and T-Mobile in Q2 2019 where it will be priced starting at $1,980.

Samsung CEO Says The Galaxy Home Will Launch In First Half 2019

Last year Samsung announced the Galaxy Home. This was Samsung’s attempt at breaking into the smart speaker market, but unfortunately, to date, the device has yet to be launched. It made an appearance at the FCC last year, but we haven’t heard anything about its release, at least until now.

Speaking to CNET at the company’s Unpacked event, the company’s head of mobile business DJ Koh confirmed that the device will be launching by the first half of 2019. Koh does not mention when exactly it will launch so we’ll just have to wait, but given the timeframe, we probably won’t have to wait too long for those details.

That being said, we are curious as to how well the Galaxy Home speaker will do. The market right now is more or less being dominated by the likes of Amazon and Google who have flooded the scene with Echo and Google Home devices. Even Apple’s HomePod speakers don’t seem to be making much of a dent.

Not to mention the general consensus is that Bixby is still lagging behind the competition, which means that the smarts of the speaker could be affected as well. Either way we’ll have to wait and see, but does anyone plan on getting the Galaxy Home when it does eventually launch?

Bixby Button On The Samsung Galaxy S10 Can Be Remapped

One of the annoying features in more recent Samsung phones is the dedicated Bixby hardware button. The idea behind it is that it will allow users to quickly launch the digital assistant at the touch of a button, but given that Bixby has been found to be lagging behind the competition, it’s not surprising that not many people want to use it.

At the start, users discovered that they could remap the button, but this was later stopped by Samsung which ticked off users to no end, but the good news is that a couple of years later, Samsung has finally given in. In a report from The Verge, they have confirmed that with the recently announced Samsung Galaxy S10, users will finally be able to remap the Bixby button to their own apps.

The button currently accepts single or double presses, and users will be able to choose what the presses do. For example you could choose to launch Instagram with a single press, which means that Bixby will launch on double press, and vice versa. Holding on the button for an extended period of time will launch Bixby voice, that much hasn’t changed yet.

This is great news for Samsung fans who might not have otherwise been too thrilled to have Bixby forced upon them, and having options means that users will no longer have a button on their phone that they won’t use.

Twitter’s Threaded Replies Now Available In Public Beta

Last year it was revealed that Twitter was testing out a new feature in the form of threaded replies. The good news is that if you enjoyed the idea of threaded replies on Twitter, you’ll be pleased to learn that the company has rolled out a public beta for the feature where users who are interested can take part in it.

If you are interested, you can head on over here to fill out the form to participate in Twitter’s prototype program. There is no guarantee that you will be accepted, but if you are, then you will be able to look forward to participating in various betas that Twitter has planned, including the threaded replies feature we just mentioned.

For those who are hearing about this for the first time, the threaded replies feature will offer up a cleaner look when users are replying to tweets. Right now the current interface doesn’t make it particularly obvious and if you’re not a seasoned Twitter user, it might be confusing. However the new threaded replies will make it look a bit more like Reddit which makes it cleaner, although judging by the feedback some users had when it was initially tested back in August, not everyone is a fan.

We imagine that the company will probably be taking the feedback of its users into account before the final release, but what do you think of it in its current iteration? Yay or nay?

Samsung Galaxy S10 To Get Custom Version Of Adobe Premiere Rush

There are various video or photo editing apps available on our mobile devices, but the good news for those who are planning on getting their hands on the Samsung Galaxy S10 is that the phone will be getting a custom version of Adobe Premiere Rush. The app will not be available at the phone’s launch and is only expected to be made available later this year.

For those who are unfamiliar with Adobe Premiere Rush, this is an app aimed at users who want to be able to edit videos on the go on their mobile devices. Granted it might not be as robust compared to a desktop editing app, but if you want to make a quick and simple video while on the go, it does the job fine.

Adobe Premiere Rush is currently only available on iOS devices where it was launched back in 2018. A generic version of the app is expected to be released for Android devices later this year, so if you don’t own the Samsung Galaxy S10, not to worry as you’ll be able to get the uncustomized version as well.

We’re not sure how different the app will be for the Galaxy S10 compared to other devices, so we’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime Samsung also appears to have arranged a discount for owners of the Galaxy S10 who might want to get their hands on it.

Gmail’s Redesign Is Rolling Out To All Android Users

Earlier this year Google announced that they would be launching a new design for its Gmail app on mobile devices. For those who have been anticipating the update, you’ll be pleased to learn that Google has confirmed to Engadget that the update is now being rolled out to all Android users as we speak.

As for iOS users, Google claims that the update should be making its way to them by the end of the week as well, so not to worry. The update will introduce an updated Material Design to the app, where as you can see in the image above, it will result in a much whiter and brighter design.

It also looks a lot cleaner than the current design, so if you like what you see, then this update is worth looking forward to. It is unclear if this design update will also include new features. Previously it was reported that Google could be looking to port some Inbox features over to Gmail. Inbox is expected to be shut down this year, but Google could be looking to salvage some of the platform’s more useful features and bring it to Gmail, but like we said, it is unclear if this will be part of the upcoming update.

Apple’s HomePod Managed To Sell 1.6 Million Units Over The Holidays

According to a report from earlier this month, it was suggested that Apple’s HomePod commanded about 6% of the US smart speaker market. Clearly this is less than ideal as it means that the rest of the market is dominated by pretty much the likes of Amazon and Google with their Echo and Google Home devices.

However it seems that the HomePod can’t really be considered a failure if the sales figures are accurate. According to a report from Strategy Analytics, it seems that Apple might have sold as many as 1.6 million units of the HomePod over the holiday season. This is said to represent a 45% growth, but unfortunately when looking at the sales figures of Amazon and Google, those numbers are miles ahead of what Apple achieved.

According to Strategy Analytics, they claim that Amazon sold about 13.7 million Echo devices over the holidays, while Google isn’t too far behind with about 11.5 million. It should be noted that Amazon and Google both have smaller and more affordable smart speakers, like the Echo Dot and the Google Home Mini. This is versus whose HomePod only comes in one model and is priced at $350.

Samsung is also expected to eventually enter the fray in the first half of 2019, although given how stiff the competition is, it will be interesting to see if the company’s Galaxy Home powered by Bixby will be enough to convince customers to hop on board.

Valve Could Be Considering Acquiring Dota Auto Chess

While Valve makes their own games, some of the company’s more famous and popular games are actually mods based on games which they then acquired and turned it into their own thing. Some examples include Counter-Strike, which was a mod created in Half-Life, then there is also Team Fortress which was a Quake mod, and DotA 2 which was a mod made in Warcraft 3.

However it seems that Valve could be considering expanding on its DotA franchise because according to a report from VPEsports, the company could be mulling the acquisition of a DotA 2 mod known as Dota Auto Chess. The game, for those unfamiliar, is a turned-based strategy game that uses characters from the DotA 2 franchise.

It has been extremely well-received to the point where the team behind the mod stated that they might be looking to expand their staff by hiring addition people, and it currently has about 4.4 million subscribers to date. This could be one of the reasons why Valve is interested in getting their hands on it, where they might be able to leverage the game to their advantage.

Right now apart from DotA 2, Valve also has Artifact which is a card-based game also based on the DotA universe, but it seems that it isn’t exactly doing too well where it reportedly struggles to go past 1,000 players, where last week it even hit an all-time low of just 299 players.

Pinterest Is Now Blocking Vaccination Related Searches

There is a lot of fake information floating out there, and while we would like to think all of us are smart enough to tell the fake from the real, or at least do enough research to come to our own conclusions, that isn’t always the case. As they say, a little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

This is why many tech companies are looking at ways to try and curb the spread of misinformation, and in the case of Pinterest, how they are going about that is by blocking searches for certain topics completely. This is according to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Pinterest is now blocking searches related to vaccination.

This is to try and curb the spread of anti-vaccination ideology from spreading. The company had previously attempted to try and pull misleading content from its platform, but soon discovered that they were unable to remove all of it. Not to mention this would also be a whack-a-mole like situation, where when one piece of misinformation is removed, another just appears.

By blocking searches completely, it would make it harder for that information to be discovered. Now people will believe what they want to believe, and this misinformation can still be found by going to certain users directly or check suggestions for related boards, but at the very least they won’t suddenly appear for unsuspecting users.

LG Details Upcoming Gesture Sensor Module

LG will be launching the LG G8 ThinQ at MWC 2019. As with what LG has done in the past, the company is slowly teasing features of the upcoming phone ahead of the launch. More recently LG teased that the LG G8 will come with a sound-on display, and now it seems that the company has also confirmed that the phone will support touchless gestures.

The company had previously teased that the LG G8 will support gestures that will not require the user to touch the phone, and now they have gone into detail about the sensor that will help facilitate that. This comes in the form of a “Time of Flight” sensor that is built by LG Innotek’s division.

How this works is that it reflects infrared light off a subject. It will then measure how long it takes for that light to return and use that data to calculate the depth. This sensor has been used in the past for things like facial recognition and also augmented reality, but LG seems to be applying it for use with gestures.

According to LG, this means that users will be able to interact with their device using their face or their hands. It will also come in handy when you have a pair of gloves on and need to interact with your device. At the moment we don’t know what kind of touchless gestures will be supported just yet, but come MWC 2019, LG should have all those details for us.

It sounds like an interesting feature and as we have mentioned in the past, this is a feature that we’ve sort of seen before. In the past we’ve seen some manufacturers launch features where users could hover their fingers above their screen to interact with it without touching it. This will be probably be a huge improvement over that, but whether it will be useful or novel remains to be seen.
