Good news: Smartphones last too long
Posted in: UncategorizedToday we’ve looked at a couple of studies on tech product sales, and there’s some good news for mobile users. The good news is for people that already own smartphones: these products last a long time, provided they’re taken care of properly. The bad news is for manufacturers: they’ve got to change something in their methods if they want to … Continue reading
As artificial intelligence becomes more and more capable, the implications of those capabilities start to become equal parts scary and impressive. That’s particularly true when it comes to creating images of human faces, and a new website that’s making the rounds today sums up the capabilities of machine learning pretty darn well. If you thought that AI wasn’t to the … Continue reading

Today, the grocery delivery battle is being waged between companies like Amazon, Walmart, Target, FreshDirect, and Instacart. But there once was a time when the most futuristic thing in food shopping was the car. Specifically, drive-in shopping like these stores from the 1920s.
Between read-it-later services, social media feeds, and the unbelievable speed at which a Google search can find the exact information you’re looking for, browser bookmarks have become a forgotten a relic of a previous internet age. But the basic bookmarking tools built into your browser can still be hugely useful in…
Dubai International Airport is the latest to halt flights over a drone scare following similar incidents at London’s Gatwick and Heathrow. The world’s third-busiest airport temporarily stopped operations for just under 30 minutes due to “unauthorized…
As things stand, we know very little about Amazon’s Lord of the Rings Prime Video series. We do know it will last several seasons and it will include some familiar characters from J.R.R. Tolkien’s books, though Amazon was clear it’s not remaking Pete…
NASA’s Mars Opportunity rover has helped scientists understand a lot more about the Red Planet and has also shaped the public’s view of our neighbor. The rover landed on Mars back in 2004 as part of the Mars Exploration Rover mission. 15 years later, NASA has confirmed that Opportunity is now officially dead.
It’s astonishing to think how long the rover has been able to perform its duties when you consider the fact that it was expected to have a total lifespan of about 90 days. Instead, it stayed alive up there for 15 years. The Opportunity rover traveled over 28 miles on the Martian surface from the Eagle crater where the mission started to the larger Endeavour crater.
NASA confirmed at a press conference that the Opportunity rover is no longer functional. The Mars Exploration Rover team made the final attempt to reach the rover last night which remained unsuccessful.
NASA hasn’t heard from Opportunity since June 10th, 2018 and had been trying to contact it ever since. It’s believed to have been caught up in a dust storm on Mars which blocked the rover’s solar panels. Researchers tried to ping Opportunity countless times and continued to listen over the radio waves to catch its signal again but to no avail.

Ahead of Mobile World Congress 2019 (MWC 19) Samsung has announced a new Android tablet, the Galaxy Tab S5e: its thinnest and lightest Android tablet to date.
The Galaxy Tab S5e is more affordable than the current Galaxy Tab S4 and is right in the middle of the 2019 product line-up which looks like this:
- Galaxy Tab A 10.5 ($329)
- Galaxy Tab S5e ($399)
- Galaxy Tab S4 ($649)
At $649, the competition is fierce between the Galaxy S4 and Chromebooks at the same price point (Chromebooks can run Android apps), and the best option depends a lot on your needs and wants.
For instance, the Galaxy S4 tablet has a much better display and pen experience than a lot of these Chromebooks, which may be more comfortable to use, thanks to a larger display and full-size keyboard.
But the $399 Galaxy Tab S5e still has an excellent display (10.5”, AMOLED, 2560×1600, 16:10 ratio). The lower price point partially comes from a more affordable processor option (Snapdragon 670) that is still able to handle multimedia and productivity tasks with relative ease.
With four AKG-tuned speakers and a Dolby Atmos sound capability, the Tab S5e and its 81.8% screen to body ratio should be an excellent tablet for video streaming. That’s what tablets are the most used for.
Gaming performance should be noticeably lower than what you would get on the Galaxy Tab S4, but something’s got to give, and that’s entirely expected at this price point.
What truly sets the Galaxy Tab S5e for now is the Bixby 2.0 smart assistant from Samsung. Shipping with the latest Android P, it also features a brand new user experience (UX) for Samsung’s SmartThings, which is the Samsung HUB for all Internet of Things (IoT) such as home security, WiFi connectivity, etc.
The Galaxy Tab S5e can receive an optional keyboard cover ($129.99) for maximum typing speed and comfort. Unlike the more affordable Galaxy Tab A10.5, it runs Samsung DEX, a Samsung interface that turns Android into a Windowed environment, like a regular computer.
We’ve tested it with the Galaxy Tab S4, and it is also available on high-end devices such as the Galaxy Note 9. While it’s not perfect, it’s true that it does provide a productivity boost for anyone who has to often switch from one app to another, or look at two things simultaneously.
The Galaxy Tab S5e will launch next quarter for $399.99, with the optional keyboard selling for $129.99. As usual, a 4G LTE version will also available at some point, although that has not been communicated for now.
