Virtual Desktops Are Coming Soon To Chrome OS

Chrome OS has typically been viewed as a “lightweight” operating system aimed at students and users who don’t really need much from their computers except for some productivity work and surfing the web. However if you love Chrome OS and wouldn’t mind to see it get more robust features, you’re in luck.

The folks at 9to5Google have recently managed to try their hand at a new feature coming to Chrome OS in the form of a virtual desktop. For those unfamiliar, virtual desktops are basically compartmentalized desktops where you can keep certain apps open and group them according to your needs. For example one desktop could be used for work, the other for personal, one for videos, and so on.

This is a feature that other operating systems such as Linux, macOS and more recent versions of Windows has, so it’s nice to see the feature finally arrive for Chrome OS. It was actually back in 2018 that Android Police discovered that the feature was in the works, and now it looks like an early version of it is available for preview.

From what we can tell, virtual desktops on Chrome OS will function the same way as we’ve seen in other operating systems, so if you’re already familiar with the feature, then this shouldn’t be that steep of a learning curve. When exactly it will be released for all is still unclear.
