LG Confirms 3D Time-Of-Flight Sensor For New G8 Flagship

LG has made no secret of the fact that it’s going to unveil a new flagship smartphone at MWC 2019 in Barcelona. The company also revealed that the LG G8 ThinQ is going to feature a 3D time-of-flight sensor for improved facial recognition.

LG has worked with Infineon Technologies to incorporate the latter’s REAL3 image sensor chip in the LG G8. The company says that this new chip will “deliver a new level of front camera capability in a smartphone.”

The time-of-flight sensor uses infrared light to develop a 3D model of the subject for facial recognition. Other 3D technologies use complex algorithms to calculate the object’s distance from the camera lens. The phone thus requires less processing power and energy with a ToF sensor for facial recognition.

The depth measurement capabilities of this sensor allow for improved portrait shots as well so expect the LG G8 to apply a better bokeh effect to your selfies. It’s also ideal for implementation in augmented reality and virtual reality applications.

Leaked renders of the LG G8 show that the device is going to have a notched display. LG will talk about it in detail at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2019 which begins February 25th in Barcelona.

Futuristic fabric automatically adjusts in warm and cool temperatures

Researchers with the University of Maryland have created a smart fabric that can automatically adjust its thermal properties to keep the wearer warm or cool based on the present conditions. In the summer when the conditions are warm and humid, for example, the fabric adjusts so that infrared radiation can pass through, helping keep the wearer cool. When its drier … Continue reading

You're (Probably) Sneezing Wrong

There’s a good chance you’ve had at least one disgusting cold this winter. And if you’re the least bit courteous, you probably took steps to keep from spreading your misery to others, whether by staying at home, washing your hands regularly, or minding where you coughed and sneezed. But if you’re the kind of person…

Sony Xperia XA3 To Feature A Notchless 21:9 Display

Tall 18:9 aspect ratio displays have become quite common ever since the industry as a whole shifted to the whole notched display style. Some companies have even stretched it to 18.5:9 and 19:9 aspect ratios. Sony is looking to outdo them all with an even taller 21:9 ratio display for the upcoming Xperia XA3.

Some press renders of the upcoming Sony handset have been leaked online which show a significantly taller notchless 21:9 aspect ratio display. It’s notchless because Sony hasn’t opted for a notch or a punch hole. It has stuck with the old school design of having a camera in the top bezel.

The display specifics remain unknown but a report suggests that the XA3 might have a 5.9 inch display with 2560×1080 pixel resolution. It also said to feature a 23 megapixel + 8 megapixel dual camera system at the back with a dual LED flash. There’s a USB Type-C port at the bottom with two speaker openings. As we’ve seen on many Sony smartphones, the fingerprint sensor is mounted on the side.

This handset may feature a Snapdragon 660 processor with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage in addition to a 3,500mAh battery. It won’t be a flagship killer by any stretch of the imagination but I imagine watching movies on it will be quite the experience. Sony is expected to unveil this smartphone at MWC 2019 in the last week of this month.
