Robin’s robotic mowers now have a patented doggie door just for them

Back in 2016 we had Robin up on stage demonstrating the possibility of a robotic mower as a service rather than just something you buy. They’re still going strong, and just introduced and patented what seems in retrospect a pretty obvious idea: an automatic door for the mower to go through fences between front and back yards.

It’s pretty common, after all, to have a back yard isolated from the front lawn by a wood or chainlink fence so dogs and kids can roam freely there with only light supervision. And if you’re lucky enough to have a robot mower, it can be a pain to carry it from one side to the other. Isn’t the whole point of the thing that you don’t have to pick it up or interact with it in any way?

The solution Justin Crandall and his team at Robin came up with is simple and straightforward: an automatic mower-size door that opens only to let it through.

“In Texas over 90 percent of homes have a fenced in backyard, and even in places like Charlotte and Cleveland it’s roughly 25-30 percent, so technology like this is critical to adoption,” Crandall told me. “We generally dock the robots in the backyard for security. When it’s time to mow the front yard, the robots drive to the door we place in the fence. As it approaches the door, the robot drives over a sensor we place in the ground. That sensor unlocks the door to allow the mower access.”

Simple, right? It uses a magetometer rather than wireless or IR sensor, since those introduced possibilities of false positives. And it costs around $100-$150, easily less than a second robot or base, and probably pays for itself in goodwill around the third or fourth time you realize you didn’t have to carry your robot around.

It’s patented, but rivals (like iRobot, which recently introduced its own mower) could certainly build one if it was sufficiently different.

Robin has expanded to several states and a handful of franchises (its plan from the start) and maintains that its all-inclusive robot-as-a-service method is better than going out and buying one for yourself. Got a big yard and no teenage kids who can mow it for you? See if Robin’s available in your area.

Microsoft Confirms Build 2019 Conference For May 6th

Microsoft talks about the future of Windows at its annual Build conference. Many look forward to the event to see what software advancements Redmond has to share. It has now confirmed the dates for Build 2019. The event will kick off on May 6th this year at the Washington State Convention Center at its home city of Seattle.

Microsoft’s Build 2019 developer conference will start on May 6th and run through to May 8th. The company is holding it in Seattle like last year. That’s not the only similarity with the past. The dates are once again clashing with Google’s I/O developer conference.

The company is going to open registrations for Build 2019 on February 27th and it will also post the agenda around the same time. Expect to see major Windows-related announcements during the keynote. It also uses the Build stage to talk more about the improvements that it has been cooking up for other services like Azure, Office, and more.

We may also get to hear more about the “Windows Lite” that Microsoft has been working on. It’s a lighter version of the company’s operating system for users don’t require all of the power of a Windows desktop and are willing to make that trade in return for more portable devices that are capable of running Windows apps.

Indian Government Wants WhatsApp To Come Up With A Way To Curb Fake News

Fake news can spread through various mediums, such as social media. It can also be spread through messaging apps such as WhatsApp, where users can simply forward and pass along fake news to their contacts at a touch of a button. This has presented a problem in the past in countries such as India, where it now appears that the government has had enough.

According to the Indian government’s Union Minister of State for Home Hansraj Ahir, it looks like they are now asking WhatsApp to come up with ways to curb the spread of fake news. “Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued notices to WhatsApp conveying that they need to come out with effective solutions that can bring in accountability and facilitate enforcement of law in addition to labelling forwards and weeding out fake news.”

WhatsApp has in the past come up with several different ways to try and curb the spread of fake news and spam. One of those ways was to limit the number of people that a message could be forwarded to. This would in theory prevent rumors and fake news from being spread too quickly, although at the same time not a 100% solution.

They have also introduced the “forwarded” label where messages that have been forwarded are labeled as such so that users know where the message might have come from, and thus hopefully treat it with a bit more skepticism. It is unclear if there could be a permanent or more effective way of dealing with fake news spread through messaging apps, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
