Drink Some Beer, Develop Some Film with It

Meet Dogfish Head SuperEIGHT, a Gose beer created in collaboration with Kodak. Why would Kodak be involved with beer you ask? Well, this beer has the perfect pH to develop film when you add some ingredients.

If you happen to be in need of developing some Super 8 film, you can now drink and develop to your heart’s content. The beer is brewed with eight ingredients that include prickly pear, mango, boysenberry, blackberry, raspberry, elderberry, kiwi juices, toasted quinoa and an ample addition of red Hawaiian sea salt. And that’s how it gets its vibrant red color.

By combining the beer with vitamin C, baking soda, and a couple of Kodak development chemicals, it’s able to develop Super 8 film just fine. Just be careful not to drink the beer after developing the film. You can check out a video right here of a trip to Philadelphia that was processed with the beer.

Is there anything that beer can’t do? And my second question is why this needed to be invented. Who thought of this? Are Super 8 film photographers drunk? I have no idea. I think I’ll just stick to Photoshop, and pretend that the beer in my hand is actually helping my project.

Samsung Galaxy Fold Pre-Orders Will Kick Off April 26

The Samsung Galaxy Fold is an interesting device and seems like it has the potential to usher in a new era of smartphone design and functionality. However while it does hold potential, it is still a bit “out there”, not to mention its asking price of $1,980 puts the phone well out of the reach of many customers.

However if you don’t mind being an early adopter and dropping close to $2,000 for a smartphone, then you might be interested to learn that Samsung has confirmed that the phone will be opening for pre-orders on the 26th of April. This is the same date for Europe and the US so both regions will be able to pre-order it at the same time. It is also expected to be released on the 3rd of May.

That being said, don’t expect to be able to go to a Samsung store and try the phone for yourself. This is because Samsung had previously stated that they want to control the retail experience, meaning that a readily-available demo might not be found. Instead Samsung wants to create a more luxurious shopping experience, kind of like how Apple did when they launched their Apple Watch Edition years ago.

It remains to be seen how well the Samsung Galaxy Fold will do, especially since it has both price and new technology going against it, but we’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, any of our readers planning on going out and placing a pre-order of their own?

Google’s Stadia Game Service WIll Not Support Downloads

Google had recently announced its new game streaming service called Stadia. This is the full version of Project Stream which launched last year and allowed gamers to stream games through their Chrome browser, and now during an interview with GameSpot, Google has revealed some additional information about Stadia.

This information is related to downloads, where some might be wondering if games could be downloaded for offline play, similar to how streaming services like Netflix and Apple Music support offline watching and listening. Unfortunately according to Google VP Phil Harrison, it will not be possible. “It would be a compromise of our vision if we were to do that.”

Harrison claims that it would be technically impossible to do so and we get it. Game streaming while similar to music and video streaming, is a bit more complex because it involves computation that takes place on remote servers. Allowing a game to run offline kind of defeats that point in which gamers would be better off just downloading the game on their computers in the first place.

Google has yet to confirm the pricing of Stadia and according to Harrison, Google already has one in mind but aren’t ready to talk about it yet. The company had also previously confirmed that Stadia will require gamers to have an internet connection of at least 25Mbps in order to stream 1080p games at 60fps, or 30Mbps if they want to be able to stream 4K at 60fps.

Recent Changes To Gmail Has Broken Certain IFTTT Recipes

The wonderful thing about apps such as IFTTT is that it allows users to automate certain aspects of their smartphone. Previously the app had worked with Gmail where users could use a variety of recipes with the app, but unfortunately due to changes Google made to their API ecosystem, it has resulted in a few Gmail related recipes being broken.

In a post on its website, IFTTT confirms that certain Gmail recipes that require triggers or “Create a draft” action will be removed from IFTTT. However they note that “Send an email” and “Send yourself an email” will continue to remain in fact. According to IFTTT, it seems that they had to talk to Google in order to maintain these two actions.

They add, “The changes being made to Gmail would have required massive refactoring in how we integrated Gmail with the IFTTT platform. It would have created a lot more overhead than we had before, and the experience for users would have been degraded as a result. These updates would have made continuing to maintain the Gmail service unsustainable.”

We have seen how Google has in the past made exceptions to certain apps when it comes to making changes to Android, but unfortunately it doesn’t seem like it in this case. It is a bit unfortunate and who knows, maybe IFTTT will find a workaround in the future, but for now if you do use those triggers, it’s time to start getting used to not using them.

NASA’s Fermi clocks Galactic Speedster Pulsar

Objects out in the universe can travel at incredible speeds that are hard for humans to comprehend. NASA’s Fermi satellite has clocked a pulsar moving through space at an insane velocity. The satellite tracked the pulsar streaking through space at 2.5 million miles per hour. At that velocity, the pulsar could travel from the Earth to the Moon in six … Continue reading
