Scientists Warn Of Severe Flooding In 25 States

(AP Photo/David J. Phillip)

Federal scientists have warned this week that 25 states are at the risk of “major or moderate” flooding in the next few weeks. The warning is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s spring outlook which mentions that almost two-thirds of the lower 48 states are at a higher risk of flooding until at least May this year.

The extensive flooding we’ve seen in the past two weeks will continue through May and become more dire and may be exacerbated in the coming weeks as the water flows downstream,” said Ed Clark, NOAA’s National Water Center director, in a statement.

The warning follows record-breaking floods already witnessed in some Midwestern states as they deal with end-of-winter floods which have been caused by rapid snow melt and early spring rain. The NOAA says that additional snow melt and rain is now expected to “prolong and expand flooding” in the southern and Midwest United States.

Clark added that this is looking like a potentially “unprecedented flood season,” pointing out that more than 200 million people are at risk for flooding in their communities. The NOAA has identified the upper, middle, and lower Mississippi River basins as areas with the highest risks of moderate to major flooding in addition to the Great Lakes, Red River of the North, eastern Missouri River, lower Ohio River, and the lower Cumberland and Tennessee River basins.

Truly Wireless Powerbeats Earbuds Expected To Arrive Next Month

Beats, the Apple-owned audio company, is reportedly going to launch truly wireless Powerbeats earbuds next month. The new earbuds are said to feature the new H1 chip from Apple which is the same chip that’s present in the wireless charging AirPods. The chip will also bring the same always-on Siri voice assistant.

The timing of the launch lines up with the release of Beats X in 2016 which came out shortly after the first-generation AirPods were released. Those headphones featured the company’s latest headphone chip, the W1, as well.

Citing a source close to the retail channel, CNET reports that Apple’s Beats is going to launch the truly wireless Powerbeats earbuds in April. The new earbuds are said to have a longer battery life than the Apple AirPods which promise approximately five hours of playback.

It’s unclear at this point in time how much these new earbuds are going to cost. The Powerbeats3 Wireless, which uses a cord to join the two earbuds, retails for $199.95 on the company’s website. However, you can probably find them for cheaper on Amazon.

So one can expect the new Powerbeats earbuds to be priced in the same range. This would also mark the first time that Beats has released a product in its lineup that’s truly wireless.

Sony To Unveil New Games During State Of Play Broadcast Tomorrow

Sony has confirmed a new online broadcast for tomorrow. Dubbed “State of Play,” the company will announce new games, show new trailers for the first time, and provide fans updates on the new titles in the pipeline for the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation VR.

The idea for this broadcast might feel familiar to you if you regularly follow gaming-related news. Nintendo essentially does the same thing with its Nintendo Direct presentations. It divides announcements in multiple broadcasts throughout the year instead of making a big appearance at an industry event like E3.

Sony says that the “very first episode” of State of Play will be broadcast tomorrow, March 25th, at 2 pm Pacific. This suggests that the company is going to conduct more of these broadcasts going forward.

It promises updates and announcements “from the world of PlayStation,” with the first episode showcasing new PS4 and PS VR games in addition to new trailers, new game announcements, and gameplay footage. Fans will be able to view the live stream on Twitch, Twitter, YouTube, or Facebook. The VOD edition will also be available for viewing shortly after the first episode airs.

Sony does mention at the end that “State of Play will return throughout the year with more updates and announcements.”

Microsoft’s Chromium Edge Browser Has Leaked Online

Microsoft announced in December last year that it was going to make a significant change for its Edge browser. It’s rebuilding Microsoft Edge on Chromium which is the same open-source web rendering engine that Google uses for its popular Chrome browser. An early version of the browser has now leaked online.

Download links for Microsoft’s Chromium Edge browser are spreading on beta forums and file sharing websites. According to a report, the version that has leaked online is an early build of the version that Microsoft will release soon in public preview.

The early builds that have been developed include features like support for Chrome extensions, syncing of favorites, and some custom changes to the user interface. Some features that current Edge users would be expecting are missing, though. There’s no support for inking with a stylus or Microsoft’s set aside tabs feature for that matter. The dark mode can only be enabled with a testing flag as of now.

Microsoft also said last year that not only is it shifting the web engine for the browser to Chrome, it will also be releasing the final version of the new Edge on Mac. However, it’s unclear if the version for Mac will arrive at the same time as the one for Windows 10 does.
