Norway Working On Wireless Charging System For Its Electric Taxis

At the moment electric cars still need to be plugged in when charging. The problem with this solution is that it can be slow and due to the limited nature of these plugs, it also means that other cars might have to wait longer than you might wait for a car to get refueled using more traditional methods.

However over in Norway, a Finnish utility company by the name of Fortum is working on a wireless charging system that will help keep the country’s electric taxis topped up and charged. The country is aiming for all of its taxis to be at zero emission by 2023 and Fortum believes that this could encourage the adoption of more electric taxis.

The company thinks that current hard-wired charging is too time-consuming, and they think that their wireless charging system will help keep taxis charged up while idling at taxi stands waiting for customers. Fortum’s system is expected to be capable of charging taxis at up to 75kW. There is no word on when this system will be implemented, but if successful it could open up all sorts of possibilities where it could potentially be used in homes, parking bays in malls, and so on.

The charging plates will be used at taxi ranks which will then be linked to a receiver installed in the taxis themselves.

Some Publishers Are Warning Against Joining Apple’s News Subscription Service

Apple has been dabbling in news with the launch of services such as Apple News, but come 25th of March, the company is expected to launch a new subscription service in the form of a news and magazine subscriptions where for a fixed monthly price, customers can expect to be able to access multiple publications at once.

It sounds like a good idea and one that Texture was attempting before Apple acquired them, but it seems that some publishers aren’t thrilled about it. Speaking to Reuters, the New York Times’ CEO Mark Thompson has actually warned other publishers that they should be wary about joining Apple’s upcoming service.

Thompson said, “We tend to be quite leery about the idea of almost habituating people to find our journalism somewhere else. We’re also generically worried about our journalism being scrambled in a kind of Magimix (blender) with everyone else’s journalism.” He adds, “If I was an American broadcast network, I would have thought twice about giving all of my library to Netflix.”

This comes on the heels of a previous report which claims that The Wall Street Journal could be part of Apple’s subscription service, but others such as The Washington Post and the New York Times won’t. From a business perspective Thompson might have a point, but we’ll have to wait and see how the overall response turns out.
